HARRISBURG | -- State Rep. T.J. Rooney has closed the door on running for Congress after learning that Gov. Ed Rendell will formally recommend him to be the next chairman of the state Democratic Party.

The announcement caps months of speculation about Rooney's political future. Other Lehigh Valley lawmakers known to be interested in Toomey's seat are state Sen. Lisa Boscola, D-Northampton, and Sen. Charlie Dent, R-Lehigh. Dent said Monday that he was not surprised by Rooney's decision, given his close political ties to Rendell. . . .

Dent said he'd probably announce sometime in the next few months whether he'd enter the congressional derby. But, he said, ''I've been very encouraged by the level of support I'm receiving.''

... Former Lehigh County Commissioner Joe Pascuzzo, a Republican, has also expressed interest in Toomey's seat.
