Civil disobedience ANTI-WAR ACTIVISTS PLAN TO DISRUPT DAILY ACTIVITIES IF WAR BREAKS OUT By Dana Hull Mercury News

Malcolm Moore, 45, Tristen Schmidt, 36, Amy Champlin, 32, practice non-violent protest tactics in Berkeley.

If U.S.-led forces attack Iraq, anti-war activists in the Bay Area and around the world have ``emergency response'' plans to immediately blockade federal buildings, shut down commuting arteries and disrupt the financial districts of major cities with massive protests and non-violent civil disobedience.

Many organizers have kept their intentions under wraps so that police and officials at U.S. military bases and large corporations will be caught off-guard. But drafts of some plans have already appeared on Web sites, and intensive training sessions covering everything from ``non-violent blockades'' to ``jail solidarity'' tactics are under way.

Civil disobedience implies the refusal to obey certain laws, and has a long history in the United States and abroad. But protest tactics have evolved in recent years, aided by the coordinating powers of the Internet and by strategic tactics designed to foil police.

Instead of staging docile sit-ins, some demonstrators now link hands by putting their arms through pipes and handcuffing their wrists together. Anti-globalization activists have developed attention-getting stunts such as scaling buildings.

I did have a guy stab me with a pinknife in Eugene when we got into an argument during Gulf War I. That was the last action that "gentleman" did for a couple of weeks. He was luckily pulled into a cab by an Middle Eastern driver. The driver had to get some body work done on the cab as well. The police never even bothered to show up.

Lock em up.

Especially for anything effecting a military base.

And for at least a month for every hour on the scene. And time jailed before the end of the war doesn't count. Time starts when war ends.

Better to bring a Hummer and roll right over top of them. :)

These bozos start pulling this stuff and they will find out what real 'road rage' is and how many Californians actively exercise their 2nd Amendment. :)

Of course, it's not true. Why don't you people on FR do some research (the internet has lots of good information) before posting nonsense.

too bad it expired in 1801.

You're nuts. The Sedition Act was one of the worst affronts against liberty in the history of the country.

I always say the more things change, the more they remain the same. They did it to the Vietnam vets and now they're at it again! To their shame.

My wife and I work together so we can utilize the commuter lane for part of our commute :<). Traffic gets worse and worse but if you can you do your best timing things it can be OK. We commute 60 miles and I can do it in an hour if I time things right.

I went to grad school there in the '70s. If you don't come out of there a hardcore marxist you come out a conservative. Actually, there are alot of conservatives in the hard sciences, they just keep mum about it. While the quality of a Berkeley educaton has gone done over that last twenty years, especially in the liberal arts, the science curriculia are first rate and hard. When I was there Berkeley had 38 Nobel Prize winners on the faculty. Science and Engineering majors had little spare time for politics.

To be fair, many of these Berkeley types are really just hangers on from the '70 and '80. Apart from the politics, Berkeley is a quite pleasant place to live. It is so insular that it does not suprise me to find that delusions of granduer come easily to these yoyos.

A tip of the hat to you for the text for those Penal Code items. A caution on links: when the site does a search, the link it generates is good only for that particular search. It was very helpful of you to include the text and the name of the section.

I guess we really do need a Declaration of War, just so there will be no question that such activties constitute Treason, and those who pretend to think such a declarnion necessary will have to shut up. I believe such activities would constitute treason, even absent such a declartion, because being formally at war is not a necessary condition for the United States to have enemies. If they have enemies, then giving them aid and comfort is Treason. The Constitutional definition of Treason says "Treason against the United States shall consist only of levying War against them or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort". (empahsis added)
