SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Researchers at a government-funded science organization are investigating the possibility of burying up to 1 million metric tons (1.1 million tons) of carbon dioxide to help solve the problem of greenhouse gas emissions.

Carbon dioxide is among the gasses emitted by burning fossil fuels that are blamed for global warming.

The project will involve work with partners in the United States, Europe and Japan, to study technologies and power systems to allow carbon dioxide to be extracted from power plants and factory flues so it can be stored geologically.

Austrailia could become a net CO2 sink and sell the credits to the EU idiots.

If that stuff ever leaks out say by earthquake or volcanism there would be lots of dead people. But, Austrailia is lucky to have very little geologic activity.

This sounds like a really stupid idea to me for some reason. How are they going to make the vault gas-tight? Somehow the CO2 would have to replace the air in the mines...

Won't there be a big risk of an explosion of CO2 into the atmosphere if it isn't gas-tight?

Seems to me they should just plant more trees to convert the excess CO2 into oxygen.

C02 is often used to repressurize depleted oil fields in order to increase oil production. Many geological formations have trapped gasses for millions of years. It really isn' that hard.

Over the long term, volcanoes emit about 5 x 10¹¹ kg of CO² to the air annually. This amount is approximately 3% of that emitted by anthropogenic activity.

Check my math. That's 500 million tonnes of CO² annually (500 times what Australia is thinking of sequestering).

One additional volcano going active in a year and Australia's efforts are for nought.

This is insanity.

Since mankind has been on the face of the Earth, it has not even come close to polluting the Earth as much as one eruption of Mt. St. Helens or Pinatubo has contributed according to geologist who studied the damaging effects to the atmosphere of both eruptions. Now, how many volcanic eruptions were recorded before 1900 and how many have taken place since 1900 especially in the late 1900's, and that will explain why there is more CO2 in the atmosphere now than before. But strangely enough, it appears that vegetation, rather than choking on this increase, are thriving on this increase in CO2 (Carbon Dioxide). WHY? because CO2 to plant life is what O2 (Oxygen) is to animal life. Plants take in CO2 for photosynthesis to produce energy and growth. Latest Space observations of the Antarctic Glaciers from space indicates that the glaciers are actually GROWING IN SIZE, not becoming smaller. I'll try to put these article on this website if & when I can find it again.

Remember when we were heading into an Ice Age in the 70's? Wow, it's turned around quickly.

And what about the claims that Ohio used to be covered by a glaicer? If not for so called "global warming" we wouldn't have an Ohio. That could be seen as good or bad depending.

Let's see ..... if they bury all that CO2 under some springs, then they could produce enough carbonated fizzy water to put the French water bottlers out of business.
