So, why did they pay twice the asking price?

This invention is innovative. It's also totally stupid.

There are a very few instances where they would be handy, and none where they are indispensable.

Another example of "romancing the product!" Great ideas are a dime-a-dozen without a customer you are nowhere!

I believe they paid that price because their model was sold as an industrial model.
