Major warns Saddam could 'create Armageddon' if attacked

John Major has issued a grim warning that Saddam Hussein could try to "create Armageddon" if he is attacked by Britain and America.

Mr Major, who led Britain in the 1991 Gulf War, said there is a danger Iraq may try to drag the whole Middle East region into a conflagration by attacking Israel.

He said Saddam had not used his weapons of mass destruction in the last conflict because the Americans had made clear the consequences for his country if he did.

However this time, with the Americans threatening his overthrow, he may decide that he has nothing to lose by using them.

"This time of course, he is threatened, he is at bay, he knows that at the end of this war he is likely to be dead, or fled or on trial," Mr Major told BBC1's Breakfast with Frost.

"It is a possibility that on this occasion he may use all his arsenal and he has many targets that he could use them on. I think it is quite likely that he will try to create Armageddon."

He suggested Iraq could try to draw Israel into the war "in the hope that it would create a wider Arab coalition, muddy the water and create the maximum amount of chaos."

Mr Major said that he broadly supported the stance taken by Britain and the US on Iraq, however he warned that the difficulties would not stop once the fighting was over.

"The problems of winning the peace are going to be much more complex and probably take much longer than I think most people are yet imagining," he added.

Mr Major, in his first media interview since the disclosure of his extra-marital affair with Edwina Currie, flatly refuse to comment on the relationship.

Now is not the time to go wobbly, John.

That sounds like a reason to attack sooner rather than later.

So David Frost is up to his old tricks of sowing fear, uncertainty and doubt? I guess we have that senile old communist, Walter Cronkite, you guys have David Frost. One's about as bad as the other. LOL.

John, remember who wins that one?

Methinks the former PM has gone wobbly. Either that, or he's trying to rebuild his image among those in Britain that already have done so.

Last time I knew, Sodom was not one to stay at home. Seems like Kuwait and Iran were places he wished to visit. By extension of thought by Major, if we do not attack, armageddon will be avoided and everyone will live happily everafter. Somehow that line of thinking was tried by Neville some years ago. It did'nt work.

John Major was a catastrophe for Great Britain.

His views are of interest only to his current mistress, if even that. It would be nice if he would simply go away.

John Major is a disaster. But I have the feeling that the Tories must be playing much the same role in the U.K. that the Dems are playing in the U.S., going by Tony Blair's recent polls.

If the Tories had the sense God gave little green apples they would forcefully back Blair on the war, not oppose him. It would be the right thing to do for the sake of their country, and in the long run that usually translates into the right thing to do politically. This is NOT the issue to oppose Blair on.

The trouble is, since Maggie left the scene there is no British Conservative Party worthy of the name.

Actually, the Tories are backing the Americans even MORE firmly than Blair is. Iain Duncan Smith, the Tory leader is a former soldier and has very strident views on the subject.

John Major is on his own.

We'll have the troops there, by my guest.

I'm slowly but surely changing my opinion about whether Islam is a "religion of peace" or not. Mullahs declare Jihads against us on a daily basis. One would think that if there were a counter-balancing view we would hear it sometime. The silence is deafening.

I'm not advocating it mind you but, since we're already in the neighborhood, if Syria or Libya or Saudi Arabia or Egypt or any other damn Muslim country wants a piece of us or Israel . . . I say we give them all a big 'ol American/British bite!

And what could Saddam create if we let him continue with his buildup?? This is a man who has attacked his neighbors and own people before, UNPROVOKED.

I'd certainly like to know more about the missiles that we found. Apparently they were not there when the inspectors left in 1998.

So for 4 years, he has been building, building, building and hiding, hiding, hiding his arsenal.

How did we find this cache?? Was it out in the open and under production?? Don't tell me anyone would be stupid enough to think that what we found was the "extent" of these missiles??
