What would you recommend for caliber/firearm for concealed carry for a woman?
I need to do a little shopping for the wife.

My Girlfriend really likes her .38 Special Ruger SP101. But if she likes something in Semi-Auto maybe a .380 would be to her liking.

A .44 special Charter Arms Bulldog Pug was something I picked up last year . It's a house gun we keep laying around ....... At first I was hesitant but the little revolver is one sweet little handgun. Small, light and with the .CCI 200 gr Gold Dot Hollow Points I mentioned above is a very fine . One of the most accurate little guns I own. My second choice would be a Smith and Wesson TiLite .38 snub nose loaded with the 38 special ,+P, Federal 158 gr Lead Semi Wadcutter Hollow Point (old FBI load). The addition of Barimi Grips to either revolver will negate the need for a holster as it will slip into the waist band of slacks or a dress. My Girl Friday carries such a rig.
If recoil and weight is not a problem with her I suggest she try a Kimber 1911A1 Stainless Pro Carry in .45 ACP or a SIG P239 in .40 S&W . Very fine off the shelf handguns that need no smithing out of the box.........

Lightweight SW/Taurus/Rossi in hammerless 38+P with manstopper energy disbursement ammo...Corbon, Glazers, Hydrashock, Golden Sabers etc
A nice rubber grip is essential and get her trained and hold the gun tight or it'll blister her wee hands.

Is she a shooter already? If not I'd lean to revolvers, .38 special or .44 special in a five shot snubbie.

It is very difficult to recommend a caliber/sidearm for a person without talking to that person and observing said person shoot. In general I note the following. The lady I am seeing on a regular basis can handle a .45acp ported 10 shot semi-auto built on the high-power design for ergonomics. She still carries a 9mm stoked with Winchester Silver tip hollow points.
Clearly Squantos' recommendations will not lead anyone astray. The .44spl from charter arms is an excellent self defense piece. The .38spl's are adequate for self defense and to be honest even a .22LR or .25acp has its uses. A .22lr slug through the eye is a much better stopper than a .50 cal S&W through the wall, albeit not as impressive in terms of blast and recoil.
Kimber makes an excellent out of the box .45acp, although it will cost about $750. Geffen makes a good out of the box .45acp for about $350 retail. A $150 trigger job and one has an excellent .45acp for about $500. The lady who partly owns the range I go to carries a Fuscia framed Charles Daily .45acp (10 shot based upon the CZ design). My late wife carried a 4inch bbl .357 magnum revolver in her purse anda 2inch bbl .357 for back up. In short whatever your wife is comfortable with that she can hot her target with is what she should carry. The more comfortable she is with it the more likely she is to shoot. The more likely she is to shoot the more likely she is to become comfortable with other guns and concurrently aware of what is available and what the advantages and disadvantages are with each sidearm.

I need to do a little shopping for the wife. I started my son, when he was 5 feet tall and weighed 95 pounds with a chopped 45 automatic. he found the 'soft' recoil of it easier to handle than a .38 revolver or even a .32 auto.
I'm PINGing .38 SW
She has moved from an occasional shooter to a bit 45 fan in the last year or so.

I would recommend a Glock 23 .40 handgun for concealed carry. It is a small and light handgun that holds 10 +1 rounds of effective .40 S&W ammunition. If your wife is recoil sensitive then this gun would probably not be a good choice. It does have some recoil when you fire it.
I hear the Walther P 99 .40 S&W handgun is good choice too.
Do not let her carry a gun in her purse. A purse is usually the first article a thief will grab.
