The design of one of the world's most versatile and celebrated architects Daniel Liebeskind, is expected to be chosen as the replacement for the World Trade Centre buildings, although some of the features are likely to be radically altered or left out.
Both the governor of New York State, George Pataki and the city's Mayor Michael Bloomberg, prefer Liebeskind's jagged towers design to the other shortlisted proposal, a set of latticework towers designed by a rival practice, Think.
Liebeskinds proposals have also gained favour with the New York Port Authority, which owns the World Trade Centre Site and the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation which is overseeing the rebuilding.
Others on the corporation, including a close associate of President George W. Bush, are thought to favour Think's design, but it is unlikely that they will go against the wishes of the mayor and the governor.

I have not followed this story closely. Is the height of 1776 feet merely coincidental, or is it intended to allude to the American Revolution?
If the answer is common knowledge, please excuse the question.

I like this quote I ran across from the architect:
A skyscraper rises above its predecessors, reasserting the pre-eminence of freedom and beauty, restoring the spiritual peak to the city and creating an icon that speaks to our vitality in the face of danger and our optimism in the aftermath of tragedy life victorious, said Libeskind. I think the 1,776 number (being the world highest) is a not so subtle jab at the evil doers.
We will rebuild higher and better and the area will prosper more from tourism dollars now that it is the world highest.

Very ugly, looks like a bombed-out WWII zone.

Someone on another thread dubbed it the 'Fortress of Solitude' after the Superman movies with Brando and Gene Hackman.

I thought Richard Meier's design was much better - extremely practical, integrated well with the skyline, took up only 27% of the land. But it wasn't showy enough for the dimwits who wanted to make a "statement".
Well, I'll get my revenge. By the time Liebeskind's drawings are altered enough to make them practical and buildable no one will recognize them.

i like the peterson and partners design, it incorporates the concept of the chrysler and woolworth bldg. with a more contemporary design....past and future. i also like the green spaces.
the liebeskind isn't bad and thankfully these designs are usually modified and more practicable.

Another factor in its favour is that it will cost half as much to build. I like this. It's the only one I have liked. I can see it in my mind. The artwork is not doing it justice. The city can be proud of this design if built.

I kind of like how the highest tower mirrors the Statue of Liberty, like an echo or a response.
