I have no interest in helping that list grow. There are over 500,000 Americans directly employed by these German companies, and another half million employed by French and Belgian corporations. That doesn't even account for all the American workers whose jobs inderectly depend on the economic activity generated by these businesses. Who do you think is ultimately gonna suffer the consequences if a boycott hits the French & German bottom line?

Welcome to globalization - think of it what you will - but I want no part in this self-defeating little enterprise.

Who is going to suffer if the French and German's are successful in stopping the war in Iraq. They will feel more pain from our boycott than will we. Futher, some things are simply more important than money.

Infineon is just the semiconductor business spun-off from Siemens. There is still a lot of Siemens left.

A number of American companies and products are worth boycotting. Everytime you go to the grocery store you are voting with your wallet.

On my permanent sh*t list. Tyson Chicken, Sara Lee, Hormel, Morgan Stanley, and Levis.

"Yikes! I work for a German company."

I worked for Siemens a few years. I don't know if all their American divisions work this way but the one I did sure did. The German nationals had all the plumb positions in the company and all the decision making authority for better or worse. Americans were second class citizens in the Siemens world.

It came to a head when 90% of the engineers resigned over a three month period. I was among those. The company was being sued by most of their customers for poor quality product, and the the QA inspectors that did not pass specification non compliant components were gone in less that a day most of the time. To have a German manager acuse you of being unprofessional was the kiss of death for your Siemens career.

The German managers and some of their American minions engaged in certain practices that are just plain illegal in U.S. business. This was on federal government funded contracts, BTW. To the Germans it was just business as usual, they should have been advised by a lawyer, because they just didn't understand. It was far easier for them to proclaim, "we have always done it this way" and blame another American for their legal woes. Gutten morgan.

Don't forget German made firearms:

Mauser's

Walther's

CETME's

Since french kissing isn't taxable, no customs declarations, we don't need to boycott that...PLEASE say we don't!

First of all, the economic impact of any boycott would not get felt until sometime after a war in Iraq, which suggests that it would amount to little more than an expression of vindictive spite.

Secondly, most of these multinationals operate under a subsidiary system; by example, the U.S. operations of Interbrew (which our British friend would have us boycott) are run by Beck's North America. The impact of a boycott would be felt by American workers long before it would impact the home corporation.

Third, it's an unfair act because it means to punish the people of France & Germany without having any meaningful impact on the leadership with whom your genuine quarrel derives. Why not punish the people of Britain and Spain? Polling indicates that they're less supportive of war than are the French people (and certainly less so than the German people).

Finally, it's quite self-defeating because one of the greatest risks to the American economy arises from weakness in the German (and Japanese) economies. Furthermore, we require almost $2 billion of their money daily invested in our economy so that we can service our extraordinary current account deficits.

Do whatever if it makes you feel better, but know the ramifications of what you're doing. As for myself, I'm going to carry on much the same as always. Not that my opinion's worth much in itself...
