I just got back. Not quite what I expected. I thought it was well done but I have to reserve judgment until tomorrow because it was just too darn long and my limited brain capacity is a bit numb. I don't understand why they cut needed scenes from Gettysburg but allowed this movie to be released at almost four hours long.

Initially, it occurs to me that liberals will not like it because, first, it was historically accurate and it showed the Confederates in a favorable light, mentioning God and the bible very much.

The battle scenes were very well done. They brought back many of the actors from Gettysburg but they were obviously older and 'Gods' is a prequel. Duvall was good but too old for the part. I was thrown somewhat by the Stonewall Jackson character. Lang was very good but didn't he play Pickett in Gettysburg? I think he did. I was much more impressed by that portrayal.

I was pleasantly surprised at how many people turned out for the very first showing. Many men brought their wives, who obviously hated it. The movie did have an intermission, which I appreciated. I brought my son who loved it.

Still, as to whether or not it was real good, I have to wait because, well, it was just too damn long.

Many men brought their wives, who obviously hated it.

In a perfect world, men would not be dragged to "chick flicks" and women would not be dragged to men's movies. So men would be able to see the Civil War movie and the women could go into an adjacent theater and see "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." Twice. With Scott Baio doing a short comedy routine at the intermission in between the two showings.

My wife and I went, and we both really liked the movie. She told me she is looking forward to the third movie in the trilogy, and wants to buy the 6 hour DVD when it comes out.

Isn't that what many said about the war?

Just got back also. This is the first film on opening night with so few in attendance..Friday night too. I think the 4 hour timeframe is the kiss of death for this film. I enjoyed it and the acting was superb.

The Pianist was also excellent.

I wish you guys would stop it. I HATE "chick flicks" - watch nothing but "real men" movies. I'll betcha a lot of the other females in this forum feel the same way. So please stop painting us all with the same brush. It gets tiresome!

Took my two sons to see it on Friday afternoon. One is 19 (home on leave from the Army) and the other is 17. All of us enjoy history especially the civil war. We have visited many Civil War battlefields. Our group consensus: This movie sucks. It really, really sucks!

Lousy battle scene reenactments. Way to few people and the couple of hundred are increased with blurry computer images. Long and drawn out boring love scenes. Too much emphasis on how wonderful the south was.

A Ted Turner tribute to the way of life that he longs to return to. 3 hours and 10 minutes of wasted boring speeches and 30 minutes of piss poor battle scenes.

A complete waste of money. Don't waste your time on this movie.

Thanks for letting me know. I was thinking about going to see it even though I'm not into Civil War History. I like the intellectual kind of movies - you know, the ones that star Jackie Chan. (grin)

If you think 4 hours is too long in the theater.... wait til you see the DVD. Lawd knows how long the DVD Directors' Cut will be and don't forget all the extras. You might need a week or two to sit through all of it. Just kidding. LOL!!!

Re: post 10---Well said! We went to the first showing yesterday at the plex, and it was very well attended for an early afternoon.
All who love history, told in a truthful way, will love this movie. This morning I told my husband I am ready to go again...he prefers to wait a couple weeks, to savor the film. btw, Stephen Lang IS General T J Jackson.

I agree. If you want history told truthfully, this movie did a great job. If you want the government school history version, you won't like this movie. Some yankees won't like it because it doesn't demonize the South.

Too much emphasis on how wonderful the south was.

Oh good, finally some balance to a Civil War movie. I'll have to go see it!

Actually the DVD will be closer to 6 hours, since they removed Antietam and some other things.

Looking forward to it along with the extended version of Gettysburg.

I saw it last night in Houston at a theater which was packed with movie goers. It was well received and I reccommend it. It was long but was well done and balanced. I will definetly be buying the DVD. It was so nice to not to have to watch all the PC b.s.
