I PROBABLY would have been treated to the same anti-American rhetoric that I saw in Barcelona's anti-war protest Saturday if I'd been at the San Francisco protest Sunday. But I was in Barcelona, where Europhiles tell me I should encounter a more elegant and nuanced approach to world affairs.

Rumsfeld hardly "miscalculated" in his Old Europe - New Europe quip. He was right on target. And his quip did not galvanize any "new" Old European animosity, it merely brought to the surface the deep-seated anti-Americanism that Old Europe was attempting to couch in the more benign guise of "pacifism".

Runny was as usual, right on target.

Amazingly, like their U.S. counterparts, these Europeans apparently believe America is going to put its finest young men and women in harm's way to get oil that could be bought easily by doing what many Iraq-appeasers often suggest -- turning a blind eye to Hussein's arms buildup and mass murders, then dumping the U.N. sanctions so Iraq can pump away.

This is the part that really gets me. We had no reason to go after Iraqi oil, no more reason than to go after Kuwaiti oil or Saudi oil or Venezualian oil. We were awash in oil. Oil was so cheap here that Europe was mad at us for our willingnes to buy and burn it. We were single-handedly raising the temperature of the entire globe because of all the oil we had.

Talk of war has only made matters worse, not better. If all we wanted was oil we would have done exactly what this author suggests - given the finger to the people of Iraq and lifted the sanctions.

What do the libs do with all that gray matter between their ears - use it for paperweights?

Shalom.
