Woohoo! The terrorists hijacked 4 US civilian airliners over 18 months ago and our government is just now allowing pilots to carry guns!

I just loooove the speed and efficiency of government.

God bless our pilots.

Commercial pilots who want to carry guns in the cockpit would have to undergo psychological and background checks

Do commercial pilots presently have to take psych tests to before becoming certified/licensed?

--it has nothing to do with "being a good federal law enforcenment officer"--training should be adequate to enable the pilot to stop anyone at the cockpit door.

This is simply bureaucratic foot-dragging at its best--

Too much BS.

The beaurocrats will have World War III on our hands before the give the first gun to a civilian pilot.

WASHINGTON — Commercial pilots who want to carry guns in the cockpit would have to undergo psychological and background checks before being selected for a five-day training program under a plan announced Wednesday by the Transportation Security Administration.

These are airline pilots, does this mean they think some or all them are not psychologically stable or have criminal backgrounds. These people we trust with weapons of mass destruction on a daily basis? Get real guys. Throw out everything developed under the ex TSA and ex BATFer. Tell Admiral Loy (USCG) to try again, although his boss Secretary Ridge has a history as an anti arms rights politico and that surely doesn't help.

Five days? A CHL in Texas takes 1 full day. What in the hell are they going to use the other 4 days for? Take some stuff out, put in aircraft specific things and they should be able to do it in a single day, and the classes should be conducted on the Airport property, not way to hell and gone somewhere.

I just loooove the speed and efficiency of government.

In this case I suspect the delay and odiousness of the requirements are quite intentional and designed to discourage pilots from going through the program. It's a typical gun grabber technique. Time for Congress to slap their hands again. Mandate a 1 day class for those without military firearms experience, 1/2 day for those with it, tops.

"We're focusing on their ability to be a good federal law enforcement officer in a crisis situation at 48,000 feet,"

Get a clue guy, they aren't federal law enforcement officers, they are private citizens who happen to be responsible for the lives of many others. If they ever need to use those firearms, they will be defending themselves, their passengers and their aircraft, not enforcing the law. There will be no time for rules and regulations, nor for reading anyone their Miranda rights either. There will be no question of who the bad guys are, and no "mistaken identity". All they need to worry about is what is beyond their target, and even that is not as important as it should be for an ordinary citizen defending against an ordinary criminal, since the result of not shooting may well be the death of everyone on board, plus a much larger number of souls on the ground.

The plan calls for the training to include marksmanship,

point gun between vertical supports of door frame

lessons on legal policies

if an unauthorized person tries to cross the plane of the doorframe, you are legally able to shoot them

and defensive tactics,

if an unauthorized person tries to cross the plane of the doorframe, shoot them until they stop.

Once they tell the pilots this, what are they going to talk about for the other 4 days, 7 hours and 55 minutes?

>>undergo psychological and background checks

How much damage can an armed pilot with plans for destruction do with a gun, versus what he can already do with a fully loaded 757 flying near a major city?

Private companies should be allowed to arm any of their people they so desire..

How many former felons are carrying firearms in Malls accross America

Yet a field grade officer in the military now flying a commerical jet CANT?

Bush could order this to be so anytime he so chooses....

Fire that freaking idiot in charge of Transportation... I noticed the TSB has their own bodyguards carrying MP-5s...and a nice bunker to run to when things get too dicey..

The rest of us get duct tape and plastic sheeting... (cheap body bags)
