Saddam has been gloating over the success of the left in organising world-wide rallies against toppling him. Completely misunderstanding the resolve of President Bush, Prime Minister Blair and their allies, Saddam bragged that the counterfeit peace movement will bring about "the defeat and isolation of America."
The Egyptian weekly Al-Osboa published an interview with Saddam in which he confidently asserted that "Time is in our favour, and we have to buy more time hoping that the US-British alliance might disintegrate because of ... the pressure of public opinion on American and British streets." He evidently expects the rallies to undermine the Bush administration and save his regime
Iraq's state-controlled media gave massive coverage to the counterfeit anti-war demonstrations that Saddm's allies in the WWP (a Stalinist organisation with North Korean links) was instrumental in organising.
About eight hours of television was given over to broadcasting the rallies. The object of this media blitz was to persuade the Iraqi people that the "Western street" is on his side and does not give a damn about them.
There was no need for Saddam friends in the WWP to organise in Iraq. He issued instructions that thousands of Iraqi's were to march in support of Western marchers and were to publicly pledge allegiance to him. Although it would be suicidal to have defied Saddam some Western media outlets still reported that these staged demonstrations were spontaneous displays of support for Saddam.
It is worth noting that all the rallies, including the ones in Iraq, chanted similar slogans, made the same anti-American noises, levelled the same accusations against Bush and Blair, waved the same placards and none of them condemned Saddam for his crimes, which includes the torture and murder of Iraqi dissents.
It was noted that Iraqi exiles did not swell the leftwing rallies. Out of about 400,000 Iraqis living in the UK the rallies could not muster even a handful of them. A fact that Dr B Khalaf, a london-based neurologist, pointed out in a scathing letter that condemned the 'peace movement's' hypocrisy.
It only carries links to pro-Saddam groups, including Electronic Iraq and MAPW (Medical Association for the Prevention of War). The latter is affiliated with the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. This organisation was actually a Soviet front that was established in 1981 by the KGB and was operated by the Soviets' IDCC (International Department of the Central Committee). What more is there to be said.
"Drop what youre doing. Pack the car, get on a plane, a train, a bus or start walking. Our troops need your support right now! Theyre laying it on the line for us overseas and all they are seeing in the media is hundreds of thousands of anti-war/anti-American demonstrators marching in our streets. As evidenced by this article Anti-war Protests Anger U.S. Troops Inside Kuwait those demonstrations are starting to affect morale. You can do something about that, but it will take time, effort and sacrifice -- a modest sacrifice compared to our men and women in uniform waiting for the the word to take out Saddam and his tyrannical terrorist regime. The D.C. Chapter of Free Republic urges all FReepers and lurkers in good standing, as well as their friends and families, veterans and their friends and families and all others who want to stand up for America and support our troops to join us in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, March 1, 2003 for the Patriots Rally for America IV from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m at the outdoor Sylvan Theater on the grounds of the Washington Monument."
