Florida Boy Drowns Trying To Imitate Movie Stunt
Children Chained Selves To Test Strength
Posted: 12:21 p.m. EST February 18, 2003
PORT SALERNO, Fla. -- Friends of a 13-year-old Florida boy say he was mimicking a movie stunt when he drowned trying to swim across a pond with a heavy tow chain tied around his waist.
They're talking about a scene from the movie "Blue Crush" -- where a girl training for a surf competition holds a large rock while running on the ocean bottom and then surfaces, gasping for air.
But instead of a rock, Anthony Alfonsin and his friends in Port Salerno used a baby carriage, a milk jug and two chains as they swam across the pond. One of the chains was a heavy 10-foot tow chain the kids found in a clump of trees near the pond.
A 9-year-old friend of the victim says she left the baby stroller floating in the middle of the pond and swam for safety. But the chain was tied around her friend's waist.
Rescue workers pulled his body from the murky pond after more than 30 minutes.
A family friend called him "a typical teenager -- full of life."

Come on. This was a child. How many stupid things have you done that by some miracle didn't kill or badly injure you? I say due to the lack of the full understanding of the laws of actions and consequences, that he be excluded from the Darwin awards.

Boy isn't that the truth. I'm amazed I'm still alive after some of the absolutely idiotic things my friends and I did as teens.
Although I did get some pretty cool scars...

Will you be saying that about the next 13 year old who goes and kills or rapes somebody?

I say due to the lack of the full understanding of the laws of actions and consequences, that he be excluded from the Darwin awards. Well, everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but I think you really ought to learn about the laws of actions and consequences, myself.

NeverGore You aren't thinking - they apply to teenagers first and foremost; just because it doesn't sit well with you is unimportant.
Perhaps you misunderstand Darwin?

Although I did get some pretty cool scars... My kids were counting their scars the other day. Actually arguing over who had more and whose were the "coolest" !

A 13 year old ought to be called a 'young-adult', they're usually called 'teenagers', but they certainly have passed the 'child' stage.

Twelve is generally regarded as the age of reason. Kids certainly do stupid things, but there is a difference between taking risks and committing suicide. Parents need to explain the difference between driving too fast, which is risky, and driving over a cliff.

Seems that way. Could be because they don't have at-home moms, nagging them a thousand times a day like we did. "Don't do this...don't do that...eat your spinach...don't swim with chains around your waist...etc".
Thanks, Mom. Rest in peace.

But the chain was tied around her friend's waist. Very sad, but I think these kids failed to notice that the Blue Crush surfer was carrying the rock in her arms as she trained. That way, she could drop it in a timely manner and surface without harming herself. BTW, the surfer girl bears a slight resemblance to Jenna Bush.

I think you really ought to learn about the laws of actions and consequences, myself. Most of us learn it, fortunately most of us don't have to pay the ultimate price. Come on, O.P., didn't you do even ONE stupid thing as a boy that could have gotten you killed but didn't?
What the lawyers teach you is that if you smoke for 40 years and get lung cancer that the consequenses are getting a big payoff from the tobacco company.
