Maybe they don't want to join such an appeasement society... I don't blame them. When faced with such possibilties, and having overcome the problems, there is such disdain that the other shouldn't have to deal with it.
Of course, that would mean having to learn from other's mistakes, and that would require thought, which seems to be lacking at this time.

He warned the candidates the position could be "dangerous" because the parliaments of the 15 EU nations still have to ratify last December's decision for 10 new members to join the bloc on May 1, 2004. Chirac particularly warned Romania and Bulgaria, who are still negotiating to enter the bloc in 2007. ...
"If they wanted to diminish their chances of joining Europe they could not have found a better way."
Is that a threat?
To: txradioguy
Get real, the French don't need a new reason to keep the nations out of the EU. The Germans have only so many teats and France is at half of them.

...
honestly I felt they acted frivolously because entry into the European Union implies a minimum of understanding for the others," Chirac told reporters...Yes, Mssr. Chirac. And membership in NATO implies a minimum of understanding of threats to a member nation (Turkey). Perhaps the rest of the nations should reconsider YOUR membership.

""It is not really responsible behavior," he told a news conference. 'It is not well brought up behavior. They missed a good opportunity to keep quiet.' "Yeah, Jaques. They missed an opportunity to keep quiet and aquiesce to the demands of the most useless nation ever to be considered part of the West. Like the song says, "Here's a quarter, call someone who cares."

La Francais De Smelly (The Smelly Frenchman), Jacques "Vichey France" Chirac attacks his fellow europeans who want to join the EU??
It appears if you are not willing to kick America in the rearend, than Jacques "Vichey France" Chirac does not like you.
Mssr. Chirac...you French stink like a decomposing animal. PHEW!

Romania and Bulgaria have representative governments. Why don't we offer them membership in NAFTA, along with Turkey. Conditional, of course, on their *not* being part of the EU. (Bet we could sell a lot of finished goods to them.)

Where does Chirac get off? Someone, preferably from Eastern Europe, should remind this arrogant French ass, that it was the Eastern Europeans who were condemned to 50 years of Soviet Communism after WWII - 50 years because they had no chance in 1945 to embrace an American Liberation as did the French.

It has been increasingly clear to me that all the EU is for is to let France and Germany, and the technocrats in the various centers of EU rule (Brussels, Strasbourg, etc.) rule over Europe with an iron fist. I think it would be a disaster for these Eastern European nations to join the EU, particularly for the homeland of some of my ancestors, Poland. It will destroy the Catholic culture there. I say the Eastern European nations should say "Screw you!" to these EU leaders with delusions of grandeur, and let them go their on way. They don't want to put on chains so long after they broke the ones of Communist rule.

"It is not really responsible behavior," he told a news conference. "It is not well brought up behavior. They missed a good opportunity to keep quiet." Chirac was angered when EU candidates Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic joined pro-U.S. EU members such as Britain, Spain and Italy last month in a letter supporting Washington's line on Iraq against the more dovish stance of France and Germany.
Unbelievable. I hope these eastern European countries tell Chirac to pound sand. What an arrogant, useless excuse for a human being.

The best quote from the weekend was from John McCain (I groan to say this):
"France is like an aging star from the '40's, still trying to dine out on her looks. But she doesn't have the face for it."
France's time as a world power, as contrived as it may have originally been, is now ending. They are desperate to be the leaders of the "new" Europe and are absolutely livid that they have been (correctly) labeled as part of Old Europe. This is nothing more than a temper tantrum by a country whose relevance is quickly fading directed at the up and coming countries whose relevance is quickly rising.

JOKE BREAK:
Q: How many German and Frenchmen died in World War II????
A: Not Enough.
Q. How any French soldiers does it take to change a light bulb?
A. Five
one to sit on his butt and watch and do nothing.
the second to turn tail and run.
the third to roll over.
the forth to surrender to the light bulb and snitch out occupied sconces.
and the fifth to pick up a phone and cry to the United States.
Q. Why do we need France on our side against Sadamm and Osama?
A. So the French can show them how to surrender.
George W. Bush, Tony Blair and Jacques Chirac were relaxing in a Parisian sauna. Suddenly, there was a distinct beeping sound. President Bush pressed his forearm with his thumb & the beeping stopped. The others looked curiously at him. "Oh, that was just my pager", said George. "I have a microchip embedded under the skin of my forearm."
Two minutes later, the silence was broken by the sound of a phone ringing. Tony Blair lifted the palm of his hand to his ear & the ringing stopped. The Prime Minister explained, "That was my cell phone, chaps. I have a telecom chip implanted in the palm of my hand.
"By this time, French president Jacques Chirac was feeling sort of low-tech. Without saying anything, he quickly scooted out of the sauna, but returned momentarily. When he returned, Bush and Blair both stared at him increduously.
It appeared that a long piece of toilet paper was dangling from the Frenchman's posterior.
When Jacques saw that he had the attention of the other two men, he feigned astonishment: "Marie sainte! I'm think I'm getting a fax."
Q: How many frenchman does it take to guard Paris?
A: Nobody knows, its never been tried before
Q. What do you call 100,000 Frenchmen with their hands up?
A. The Army.
Q:How do you castrate a frenchmen???
A:Kick his sister in the jaw.
Q. What did the Mayor of Paris say to the German Army as they entered during WWII?
A. "Table for One Hundred Thousand?"
Q. Why don't they have fireworks at Euro Disney?
A. Because every time they shoot them off, the French try to surrender.
Q. What do you get if you see a Frenchman up to his neck in sand?
A. More sand.
There was a Frenchman, an Englishman and Claudia Schiffer sitting together in a carriage in a train going through Provence. Suddenly the train went through a tunnel and as it was an old style train, there were no lights in the carriages and it went completely dark. Then there was a kissing noise and the sound of a really loud slap. When the train came out of the tunnel, Claudia Schiffer and the Englishman were sitting as if nothing had happened and the Frenchman had his hand against his face as if he had been slapped there. The Frenchman was thinking: 'The English fella must have kissed Claudia Schiffer and she missed him and slapped me instead.' Claudia Schiffer was thinking: 'The French fella must have tried to kiss me and actually kissed the Englishman and got slapped for it.' And the Englishman was thinking: 'This is great. The next time the train goes through a tunnel I'll make another kissing noise and slap that French bastard again.'
Q. Hear about the library that burnt down in Paris?
A. Destroyed their entire collection and they hadn't even finished colouring in the second one !

Loss of liberty would hardly be noticed by them, so the fact that Iraq is a threat to liberty means little to them. If you want France to get on board, just how how Iraq will outlaw the french language and french 'culture', they they might actually do something usefull.

People with grand dreams of a UN with broader powers -- a world gov't so to speak -- would be wise to watch what happens when a diverse collection of nations get together, play at ceding their sovereignty to an unelected overseeing body, and find themselves in disagreement over a particular foreign policy issue.
People with dissimilar interests and motivations rarely get along when they are forced to live and work together. Why should nations be expected to be any different?
May this mark the beginning of the end for the European Union.

Brit Hume just took Chirac apart over this statement. Called it "threatening". It seems Chirac was referring to the fact that most of these nations which signed the letter, have applied for admission to the UN (?) - or would that be NATO (?). Anybody know??
