Chirac blasts eastern Europeans over pro-American stance, warns on EU membership

By PAUL AMES, Associated Press Writer

BRUSSELS, Belgium - French President Jacques Chirac launched a withering attack Monday on eastern European nations who signed letters backing the U.S. position on Iraq, warning it could jeopardize their chances of joining the European Union (news - web sites).

Latest news: • Iraq Reports 1st Flight by U-2 Spy Plane AP - 42 minutes ago • U.S., Britain Push for Iraq Resolution AP - 1 hour, 13 minutes ago • U.S. Considers New U.N. Iraq Resolution AP - Mon Feb 17,12:19 PM ET Special Coverage

"It is not really responsible behavior," he told a news conference. "It is not well brought up behavior. They missed a good opportunity to keep quiet."

Chirac was angered when EU candidates Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic joined pro-U.S. EU members such as Britain, Spain and Italy last month in a letter supporting Washington's line on Iraq against the more dovish stance of France and Germany.

Paris was further upset when 10 other eastern European nations signed a similar letter a few days later.

France argued that the moves aggravated splits in the 15-nation EU and backed the ideas put forward by U.S. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld who had earlier spoke of France and Germany as "old Europe" in contrast to the easterners seeking to join the EU and NATO (news - web sites).

"Concerning the candidate countries, honestly I felt they acted frivolously because entry into the European Union implies a minimum of understanding for the others," Chirac told reporters after an emergency EU summit on Iraq.

He warned the candidates the position could be "dangerous" because the parliaments of the 15 EU nations still have to ratify last December's decision for 10 new members to join the bloc on May 1, 2004.

Chirac particularly warned Romania and Bulgaria, who are still negotiating to enter the bloc in 2007.

"Romania and Bulgaria were particularly irresponsible to (sign the letter) when their position is really delicate," Chirac said. "If they wanted to diminish their chances of joining Europe they could not have found a better way."

Britain, Spain and other EU nations had suggested the candidate nations attend Monday's emergency summit on Iraq, but France and Germany opposed the idea.

Although Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar and British Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites) were the driving forces behind the letter backing America and EU members Italy, Denmark and Portugal also signed up, Chirac saved his wrath for the candidates.

"When you're in the family you have more rights than when you're knocking on the door," he said.

Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Cyprus and Malta are set to join in May 2004. Lagging behind economically, Romania and Bulgaria were told to wait three more years.

Instead of attending the EU summit, the candidates are due to travel to Brussels Tuesday for a briefing on its outcome by Greece, which currently holds the EU presidency.

Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis denied they had been excluded from the summit because of their backing for Washington, insisting rules require the treaties be signed first.

"We will not discuss pro-American or anti-American positions," Simitis told a news conference. "The candidate countries will be members" soon, and "we have to proceed together."

Where does Chirac get off? Someone, preferably from Eastern Europe, should remind this arrogant French ass, that it was the Eastern Europeans who were condemned to 50 years of Soviet Communism after WWII - 50 years because they had no chance in 1945 to embrace an American Liberation as did the French.

It has been increasingly clear to me that all the EU is for is to let France and Germany, and the technocrats in the various centers of EU rule (Brussels, Strasbourg, etc.) rule over Europe with an iron fist. I think it would be a disaster for these Eastern European nations to join the EU, particularly for the homeland of some of my ancestors, Poland. It will destroy the Catholic culture there. I say the Eastern European nations should say "Screw you!" to these EU leaders with delusions of grandeur, and let them go their on way. They don't want to put on chains so long after they broke the ones of Communist rule.

Maybe they don't want to join such an appeasement society... I don't blame them. When faced with such possibilties, and having overcome the problems, there is such disdain that the other shouldn't have to deal with it.
Of course, that would mean having to learn from other's mistakes, and that would require thought, which seems to be lacking at this time.

Man oh man, I wish I got FNC!! Not one peep of any of the issues you've talked about on this thread from FNC have been uttered from any others that I've heard.

Oh well, the truth will come out.

I think if we end up liberating Iraq without the meaningless blessing of the U.N. (which I believe is what will happen). Then the day the announcement of the continuation of hostilities with Iraq is announced, a courrier should arrive at Mr. Annan's office on the 38th Floor at the U.N. presnting the useless group he leads with an eviction notice! Let the U.N. relocate to Paris!

Unbelievable. I hope these eastern European countries tell Chirac to pound sand. What an arrogant, useless excuse for a human being.

The best quote from the weekend was from John McCain (I groan to say this):

"France is like an aging star from the '40's, still trying to dine out on her looks. But she doesn't have the face for it."

France's time as a world power, as contrived as it may have originally been, is now ending. They are desperate to be the leaders of the "new" Europe and are absolutely livid that they have been (correctly) labeled as part of Old Europe. This is nothing more than a temper tantrum by a country whose relevance is quickly fading directed at the up and coming countries whose relevance is quickly rising.

Excellent point, bimbo...

America gave FREEDOM to the Smelly French, while the Romanians and Bulgarians suffered 50 years of communism.

This confirms the theory floating around here and elsewhere about the Franco-German axis' motivation for blocking our action in Iraq. Chirac et al hoped that their opposition would re-unite the failing EU experiment. I have a feeling Chirac might be wrong.

More than that : If they can force the US to concede that it needs to ask permission from the EU and the UN to defend itself, then you can bet a demand that we surrender our national sovereignty completely and ratify the ICC will follow. A demand that we ratify Kyoto, whose primary purpose is to give the EU a permanent economic advantage over the US will follow. And so on.

Some how in those smokey back room politics of Europe, France and Germany have figured out a way to control the EU. And they are mad that the rest of the EU is not towing the French "line" on Iraq and the U.S.

JOKE BREAK:

Q: How many German and Frenchmen died in World War II????
A: Not Enough.

Q. How any French soldiers does it take to change a light bulb?
A. Five
one to sit on his butt and watch and do nothing.
the second to turn tail and run.
the third to roll over.
the forth to surrender to the light bulb and snitch out occupied sconces.
and the fifth to pick up a phone and cry to the United States.

Q. Why do we need France on our side against Sadamm and Osama?
A. So the French can show them how to surrender.

George W. Bush, Tony Blair and Jacques Chirac were relaxing in a Parisian sauna. Suddenly, there was a distinct beeping sound. President Bush pressed his forearm with his thumb & the beeping stopped. The others looked curiously at him. "Oh, that was just my pager", said George. "I have a microchip embedded under the skin of my forearm."

Two minutes later, the silence was broken by the sound of a phone ringing. Tony Blair lifted the palm of his hand to his ear & the ringing stopped. The Prime Minister explained, "That was my cell phone, chaps. I have a telecom chip implanted in the palm of my hand.

"By this time, French president Jacques Chirac was feeling sort of low-tech. Without saying anything, he quickly scooted out of the sauna, but returned momentarily. When he returned, Bush and Blair both stared at him increduously.

It appeared that a long piece of toilet paper was dangling from the Frenchman's posterior.

When Jacques saw that he had the attention of the other two men, he feigned astonishment: "Marie sainte! I'm think I'm getting a fax."

Q: How many frenchman does it take to guard Paris?
A: Nobody knows, its never been tried before

Q. What do you call 100,000 Frenchmen with their hands up?
A. The Army.

Q:How do you castrate a frenchmen???
A:Kick his sister in the jaw.

Q. What did the Mayor of Paris say to the German Army as they entered during WWII?
A. "Table for One Hundred Thousand?"

Q. Why don't they have fireworks at Euro Disney?
A. Because every time they shoot them off, the French try to surrender.

Q. What do you get if you see a Frenchman up to his neck in sand?
A. More sand.

There was a Frenchman, an Englishman and Claudia Schiffer sitting together in a carriage in a train going through Provence. Suddenly the train went through a tunnel and as it was an old style train, there were no lights in the carriages and it went completely dark. Then there was a kissing noise and the sound of a really loud slap. When the train came out of the tunnel, Claudia Schiffer and the Englishman were sitting as if nothing had happened and the Frenchman had his hand against his face as if he had been slapped there. The Frenchman was thinking: 'The English fella must have kissed Claudia Schiffer and she missed him and slapped me instead.' Claudia Schiffer was thinking: 'The French fella must have tried to kiss me and actually kissed the Englishman and got slapped for it.' And the Englishman was thinking: 'This is great. The next time the train goes through a tunnel I'll make another kissing noise and slap that French bastard again.'

Q. Hear about the library that burnt down in Paris?
A. Destroyed their entire collection and they hadn't even finished colouring in the second one !

I'm really amazed that he would say that. This will only go over poorly in Eastern Europe, which already distrusts him completely.

This truely baffled me, I think he's only talking to his own supporters here, the only pretentious humans on earth that would hear this condesending look down of his ample nose, and not see it as...pretentious!

He's already written off Eastern Europe, so all he can do is to call them insolent and uncouth, the last desperate weapon of dithering Euro-trash. Long live my Polish distant cousins! Europe is your's if you remain capitalist.

Loss of liberty would hardly be noticed by them, so the fact that Iraq is a threat to liberty means little to them. If you want France to get on board, just how how Iraq will outlaw the french language and french 'culture', they they might actually do something usefull.
