TOLUCA, Mexico (AP) - A proposal to institute the death penalty in Mexico's largest state was overwhelming approved by voters during a nonbinding referendum Sunday, but voter turnout was not as high as organizers had hoped.

Traditionally, this country has opposed capital punishment and it is unconstitutional in Mexico state, where the vote was held. Still, the referendum invited the state's 8 million voters to say whether they would like to see kidnappers, armed robbers, first-degree murderers and child abductors put to death.

This is encouraging..

Some 95.2 percent of voters supported life sentences for corrupt public officials and rapists, Pastor said.

Texas should make an offer to annex it.

Take note, Vicente Fox apologists. The "conservative" President of Mexico speaks again:

Fox condemned the referendum in an interview with the government news agency Notimex late Sunday, saying ``it seems to me a mistake to promote (capital punishment) under the guise of a referendum."
"I unequivocally oppose the death penalty,'' the president said. "It's a mistake that doesn't solve problems with crime."
Fox canceled a visit to the Texas ranch of U.S. President George W. Bush in August, after Bush refused to halt the execution of a Mexican murderer.

Seems "center-right" Vicente has taken the FAR LEFT position yet again. Let's see, that makes about 87 times he's supported them and zero times he's done something even remotely "conservative". You know the mindset-- Hold guilty people accountable and prevent them from killing again? Can't do that. SCREW WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT, Vicente Fox parrots the far-left Europetrash/McGovern/Dukaksis/Kerry line that we should bend over backwards for criminal "rights" (but, of course, say nothing about the execution of the innocent unborn).

Oh, and if you THINK he's taking position due to being a "devout Catholic", bear in mind that the PREVIOUSLY MARRIED Fox arrogantly broke the church's marriage laws so he could have a young, attractive first lady for Mexico.

WAKE UP PRESIDENT BUSH
FOX IS A SCUMBAG SOCIALIST!

POSITION 1
"The PRI controlled Mexico's presidency for 71 straight years before losing to President Vicente Fox in 2000. The party has maintained that despite the referendum, it doesn't support the death penalty."

POSITION 2
"I unequivocally oppose the death penalty,'' the president [Vicent Fox] said. ``It's a mistake that doesn't solve problems with crime.'' [Fox is leader of the PAN party]

Where have we seen this type of posturing in America? More proof, IMO, adding to the mountain of evidence that Vicente Fox is the "Lincoln Chafee" of Mexico. He seeks to undermind the PRI by taking a traditional conservative party and using it to out-liberal the liberals on their bread-and-butter issues. Or simply put, on what issue does the "center-right" Vicente DISAGREE with the PRI? None.

This is why continuing to (falsely) portray Bush as a Vicente Fox adherant will only DECEASE hispanic-American support for the GOP. Certainly, I would not vote for Bush if he was portrayed as a Rockefeller Republican.

On that issue, that puts him to the left of the far-left California Governor Gray Davis who not only supports the death penalty, but uses it as a litmus test when appointing judges.

Yeah, the "conservative" President of Mexico had a hard time deciding whether Bill Clinton, Gray Davis or George Ryan was his ideal American role model. Ryan's sick pro-criminal agenda cuddled with his attempts to hijack a "conservative" party probably gave him the edge for Vicent's affections.
