I live in SW GA, so the winter here lasts about two weeks. Not too many heavy coats to worry about. If the 6's dont dissuade a would-be intruder, the ensuing encounter he will have with the #1 buck almost certianly will. At any range inside my house (typical ranch layout), penetration really wouldnt be an issue. Blunt trauma would stop him.

One more comment before i go back to work.
This may have already been mentioned somewhere in this thread, but IMO the most effective home/self defense weapon is one you are comfortable with and are confident in. If you are proficient with a pistol, use a pistol. If you have confidence in a scattergun, same story. If you are hell-on-wheels with a garden hoe, go for it. At any rate, take a course and get some training in the proper use/care of your weapon of choice. Its not as easy as you think to grab a weapon and defend yourself with a bad guy barelling down on you.
Just my 2 cents...

The problem is some of us are relatively proficient with multiple weapons and are faced with decisions decisions. Do I use the 1911 with the cutom rubber grips, the Kimber, the EAA witness, the Remington 1100, the Mauser .45acp, etc. I figure start anyplace and work my way through until there is no more home invader acapable of continuing an attack on me.

They are super reliable, though. Due to the loose tolerances which lead to less a less accurate rifle as you mentioned it is.

Although one time I did absent-mindedly shoot buckshot through a rifled 12-guage barrel (which is designed for rifled slugs). It produced a yard-wide doughnut pattern at 7 yards, due to the spin imparted to the buckshot. Interesting. I will definitely have to do some more research!

Thanks.

The Jurassic Park movies were even WORSE...at NO TIME in eany of them did ANY gun ever work against the dinos. Face it,if they had it would have been a VERY short movie.

Then I could find out f they taste like chicken. Well, they were supposed to be the ancestors of today's birds. Can't see anybody pulling up to a drive-in window and ordering a bucket of T-Rex wings, though.

If you can find the name of the video and where I might get a copy I would appreciate it. I'm pretty sure Dillon (the reloading press people) sell it through their free booklet "The Blue Press". They even have a toll free number you can call, but I don't know what it is anymore.I'm also pretty certain they have a web site. Do a search using "Dillon" and "reloading presses". Dillon himself is seriously into full-auto weapons, and has a bunch of them.

"Face it,if they had it would have been a VERY short movie" Actually, the word is that Steven Spielberg has "got religion" and will no longer allow ANY positive, favorable portrayal of guns or their use in his films. This DESPITE the hipocrite's having what is reported to be the finest gun collection in H'wood, shy of Heston.
After all, it was HE who digitally removed all the guns from "E.T." and replaced them with radios!
Of course, this does not apply to films like "Saving Private Ryan", wherein the guns are used against people he doesn't like.

I always wondered WHAT you'd use if you were hunting, or had to shoot, a dinosaur. Let's see...a T-Rex weighed about 8-12 tons and stood a good 20 feet tall. Thick hide could be assumed, as could a well-protected nervous system.
I don't think I'd want to take one on willingly with less than a .460, and even THEN I'd want a larger-than-stock magazine.
For bigger game, like Brontos or Brachiosaurs, in the 30-70 ton range, a .50 would probably be best. Opinions? I KNOW it's pure speculation, but hell, it's fun.

At any range inside my house (typical ranch layout), penetration really wouldnt be an issue. Blunt trauma would stop him. You betcha! Especially blunt trauma caused by penetration from the wad! Think "plastic slug",and you won't be far off the mark. I've seen the plastic wad cup from light field loads in 20 gauge penetrate a galvanized steel 30 gallon trash can. And at typical room distances, that IS what you would be dealing with.

That comment was geared more toward people who want to invest in a single weapon to protect the home. Not for gun nuts...err...enthusiasts..like you and I.

I personally would want the 20mm Barret at minimum for a T-Rex that thing has way too big a set of teeth to trust anything less.

"I personally would want the 20mm Barret" I'm assuming, for discussion's sake, that we are limited to non-destructive devices, AND that we would want to preserve as much of the meat as possible.
Believe it or not, in a discussion of this same topic in my shop, one guy SWORE that he could do it with his trusty bow and arrow. Lucky for him, he'd never had to prove it. He was a weird one, BTW.

That is a wonderful picture and I would love to have one of those for home protection.

I would like to have that new pistol that came out. I think that it was by Smith and Wesson. It was a 50ca.
