Lawton: Terror alert will be raised to red _sometime

The nation's terror alert will "inevitably" be raised from orange to red, signaling imminent attack, Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton said Friday after a meeting with Vice President Dick Cheney and Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge.

"It will come sometime," Lawton said in an interview on the Wisconsin Public Television program "Here and Now."

She said she could not say when that would happen, though. "Not today, and maybe not Sunday, but we don't know when."

Lawton met with federal officials as part of the National Lieutenant Governors Association winter meeting in Washington, D.C.

She said much of the discussion revolved around the $3.5 billion in grants Congress approved to go to the states this week.

"They want us to direct all of it or most of it to terrorist-related investments, not to extra fire trucks," Lawton said.

Wisconsin could be eligible for some of the money, she said.

AP has written a totally incomplete article. Did the Wisconsin governor meet solo with Cheney and Ridge? If so, that gives more importance to the statement.

More likely, there were 50 governors (and assorted other people) present, and the remarks made by the V.P. and head of Home Security were generalized.

Most important, the other governors aren't spreading the same malicious rumors as the democrat governor is.

Just my guess, of course.

Good points. I have to assume that all or most of the Lt. Governors had the same information as Lawton. Why Lawton is blabbing is another matter.

I think it is interesting in gauging the mood of the feds only a day or so ago. It appears the Ridge and company were bracing the states for an escalation in the threat warning status.

Oh that's rich. What does Lt. Governor Lawton think; that she is the only one privy to this information. It must make her feel really "smart" to make such an obvious statement.

On Thursday I saw an object overhead from about northern Waupaca County travel SSE and clear the horizon at about Lake Winnebego. It travelled the distance in about 90 seconds, left no contrail other than a comet like tail. I watched it while plowing drifted snow from our runway. It was not a jet or plane.

Maybe that was what our Lt. Gubner was shaky about. It was very cool, very, very fast.
