TONY CURTIS-PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN
WPTF 680 AM Radio | 2/13/03 | wimpycat

I was listening to Jerry Agar's show on my way home from work today and caught Jerry's interview with actor Tony Curtis. Tony will be starring in the musical version of "Some Like it Hot", playing in Raleigh next week, so he was obviously on Jerry's show to plug his musical. (No, he won't be wearing a dress this time.)

Anyway, after some little juicy tidbits of Hollywood gossip, such as Tony saying that he and Marilyn Monroe had been lovers way back when he was 23 and she was 21 and they were both trying to make it big in Hollywood, Jerry reminded the audience that Tony Curtis served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Tony confirmed that and said he had been in the Submarine Service. So Jerry asked him what he thought about what's going on in the world today.

Tony then proceeded to say that he was "so proud" to be an American. He said that America had given him everything. He said that his parents were immigrants from Hungary and he was a first generation American. He said he served in the Navy during WWII, and after the war he got his "GI Bill of Rights" which put him through acting school, and then he went to Hollywood right out of acting school. And then he said something again to the effect of this country having given him everything.

He wondered why people would question our country. He said, "If our country says we're in danger, then we're in danger", and that if our country thinks the best thing to do is to go after these people, then why would we question that?

Then he said he was a huge Bush supporter, because he thinks he's doing an "excellent job" (referring to the war on terror).

Finally, Jerry asked him, "You know, we were talking about actors and actresses earlier...what do you think about this Jamie Lee Curtis?"

Tony said, "Beautiful girl. Wonderful actress. Some day she's gonna make it!" LOL!

For those of you who don't know, Jerry Agar is a local conservative radio talk show host who talks about a wide variety of local, national and international issues. He loves sparring with callers. There's this one guy who calls in regularly from Chapel Hill, who Jerry has dubbed, "Todd the gay liberal" and they engage in some pretty lively debates. He is also hosting our very own Congressman Billybob on Monday's "Drive-By Education" series. From 5:00pm to 6:00pm every Monday, Congressman Billybob and Jerry are working their way through the Bill of Rights. This past Monday they were going over every phrase in the Sixth Amendment and each phrase's meaning, history and legal implications. Very interesting and informative, to say the least.

I'm not a really huge fan of Tony Curtis, but he is pretty funny. I LOVED him in "Operation Petticoat", "Captain Newman, M.D." and "Spartacus".

BTW, he also said that he loves the fact that his movies are still on TV all the time (typical aged Hollywood star) and he will watch them, and he rattled off a whole number of his films. I won't be able to catch his musical, but I hope it brings him success.

Thanks for the post. Way to go Tony. Nice to know that at least one of the hollywood hearthrobs I had a crush on as a girl has his head screwed on straight. Houdini was my favorite.

To tell you the truth, I think he's got a little bit of the aged Hollywood star syndrome about him, and he might be one of those types who will say anything to please his audience (Jerry's audience is pretty conservative), but he was quite adamant that he loves his country, he's a WWII vet, and doesn't believe in questioning his country during wartime. I don't know if he's an all-around Bush supporter, but he's clearly with Bush all the way on military matters.

Saw James Garner a couple of weeks back and he was saying some nasty things about the Bush administration.

Surprised me because I would have pegged Garner as a conservative.

That's right! I remember him serving in a pink submarine! And those nurses ...

Seriously though, I like "old Hollywood" a lot more than "old Europe". Thank you, Mr. Curtis, for your life's work and your patriotism.

Good for him. Clever quip about his daughter, too. I wonder if she's a Bush supporter or follows the Hollywood crowd.

No, I heard James Garner say things several years ago that convinced me he's a stereotypical Hollywood liberal.

It's good to hear this about Tony!!

Did you see a similar article posted about Jane Russell a week or more ago? She said that ALL of the old-time movie stars were Republicans! She named some, James Stewart, Howard Hughes, and many, many more. She was at the CPAC convention.

I saw Tony Curtis in "Some Like It Hot" at the Dallas Summer Musicals last summer. Fun little show with lots of good song and dance numbers and gags. It's a revamp of the show "Sugar" with the original movie title restored to it. Tony can't really sing or dance, but he can croak his way through a tune with enough panache to go over, and it doesn't matter because he carries so much Old Hollywood star power and the audience loves him so much, they give him a standing ovation just for showing up and giving it a go. Glad to hear he's so patriotic, and I wish some of it could rub off on today's worthless, spoiled Hollywood snots.

Remember Tony Curtis in "Spartacus" ... going back to the early sixties. Another movie "Trapeze" with Gina Lollobrigia(sp?)before that ...
Frankly I was under the impression Tony Curtis died a few years ago ... glad to hear I was misinformed.
