A Dallas jury has sentenced the fourth Texas prison escapee to death in the slaying of an Irving patrolman.
Joseph Garcia, 31, was convicted of capital murder last week. The jury deliberated nearly three hours before returning with the verdict in his punishment late Thursday afternoon.
Prosecutors argued that Mr. Garcia deserves the death penalty because he was the prison gang's enforcer who bullied hostages before joining the shooting frenzy, prosecutors argued.

Defense attorneys argued Mr. Garcia deserves to be confined in a solitary cell in prison for the rest of his life. They said jurors should take into account the abuse and neglect he suffered as a child that affected him as an adult. They also said that before the new life sentence could begin, Mr. Garcia must serve the rest of the 50-year sentence he was serving on a murder conviction when he escaped.
The defense also argued that prosecutors have never proven that Mr. Garcia shot Officer Aubrey Hawkins, 29, who was struck by 11 bullets on Christmas Eve 2000 shortly after he arrived at the back loading dock of Oshman's SuperSports USA.

Officer Hawkins had been dispatched to investigate a suspicious-persons call, but he interrupted the escapees' armed robbery of the business. Prosecutors said the patrolman died within 24 seconds of arriving and that the escapees stole 44 guns and $100,000 in cash.
The three other escapees convicted in Officer Hawkins' death have also been sentenced to die.

Too bad capital punishement hasn't been revitalized in all states.
If we don't us the death penalty in cases of cop killings, then it's a joke.
Half bake them slowly in the sun (with additiona sunlapms...maybe a taosty 145F would be a good setting...the administer Drano ememas...maybe 15% Drano...just so it would last a while...then a slow drawing and quartering...maybe one limb at a time, while simultaneously castrating them and feeding them each others gonads. ne some hemostatsis is achieved after the quartering and a little life support, spread them out on a large frying pan at about a slow simmering 200F...THAT'S A COP KILLER DEATH PENALTY!
