Swiss researchers who last November analysed a tape attributed to Osama bin Laden say they won’t be scrutinising the latest recording broadcast by the Arabic television network, Al-Jazeera.

The Swiss analysts said the previous tape was almost certainly faked, despite US claims to the contrary.

The Dalle Molle Institute for Perceptual Artificial Intelligence (Idiap) in Martigny told swissinfo on Wednesday that it had no intention of analysing the latest tape.

United States officials say the recording, which calls on Muslims to fight the US and repel a war against Iraq, is “probably” the voice of Osama bin Laden, suggesting a link between Iraq and bin Laden's al-Qaeda network.

The US said a similar recording, broadcast by Al-Jazeera on November 12, was also genuine, despite analysis by Idiap researchers, who concluded that it was faked.

However, the company said the poor quality of that recording coupled with the limited number of voice examples meant that it was unlikely the recording could ever be properly authenticated.

The finding suggests that no one can say with certainty whether the November recording, or similar ones, are definitely the voice of bin Laden, as some US officials have claimed.

Idiap, based in Martigny in canton Valais, told swissinfo it had agreed to analyse the November tape, at the request of a French TV channel, for reasons “mainly motivated by pure scientific curiosity”. It added that it therefore had no need to conduct further analyses on new recordings.

Does anyone else think there is something fishy about this new "Osama" tape coming out right now, especially since the liar treasonous liberals have been at it for weeks now trying to stop us from defending our vital interests? If I were a paranoid liberal, I'd at least suggest the CIA is behind this to stir up more world-wide resolve. Too bad they would have to resort to this tactic, but alls fair in love and war. Especially when dealing with the liar treasonous liberals. I think Osama is dead. I think America knows it, but wants to use him as the boogie man. They don't want to let the Muslim world know he's dead or he will become an official martyr. But his likeness is useful for war internally and for the needed opinion to ratchet it up to fight the enemy and those with a liberal agenda. Unfortunately, the enemy within is as formidable as the one on the outside. The suspicions and outright treason of the liberals does not help one bit.

Perhaps he is dead, and perhaps it is NOT the USA putting out these so called recordings at all! I concur that the possibility that Osama is alive is useful for the Administration, especially for getting continued congressional funding. I disagree, however, that the possibility that he is alive hurts Al-Qaeda's cause. Sure, if he's dead, he's a martyr. But alive, he remains a mythical figure, larger than life, who has taken the Great Satan's best shot and escaped with his life. Allah Akbar!

As amused as I am by the sideshow, I am certain he died at Tora Bora in December 2001.

My belief is OBL is dead and all the tapes have been fakes. However, since the RATmedia has been using them to undermine Bush's policy on Iraq I believe it fine to use a fake for proper purposes. There is nothing false that I have seen in the latest tape. It is true there is a connection between OBL and Iraq. So no problem.

If the tapes were saying things that are not true (like the Gulf of Tonkin incident) it is a different matter.

Our government would appear foolish to the world if we "declared" Osama to be dead and he did reveal himself once again physically somewhere down the road.

The tapes are likely faked but the sentiment on them is genuine (whether it is the will of Osama or not, look at MLK III say that his dad was against the war in Iraq even though he died long before it was a concern). There are those in Al Qaeda that do want to see attacks on American interests. Look at the "lone nuts" that took action into their own hands after 9.11.01.

Plausible deniability is the name of this game and the fewer attacks that can be linked to Al Qaeda, let alone Iraq/Saddam, the more it eases the simple minds of the left.

Never have seen a trace of either Adolph Hitler or Jimmy Hoffa's bodies yet there is no doubt they are both long since dead.

I think the tapes are a minor curiosity, to those who are interested in such things. As for me, I really don't care whether they are real, fake, threatening, or peaceful. Terrorists attacked us, and now we are attempting to eliminate terrorists.

I made no judgments, only observations. All of this is theory. Who knows who controls what? But rogues with parallel agendas could support the just cause, even if not officially sanctioned. Sort of like Friends of Bill's commercials. It is a possibility. I know not who to believe, but the whole thing is fishy and our own gov't. could be as duped as you or I. I have unshaken faith in Bush and his eladers and do not suggest they were behind such a possible tactic, only part of its snowballe ffect. Who knows. What I do know is Saddam and the others who support and enable terroriusm must go. It is a game of survival and in that game, alls fair in love and war.

Sooooo, for the boobs at Democratic Uninformed, er, Underground, everything Bush does is always wrong: if Osama is alive, we didn't accomplish diddly in the war on terrorism, and Iraq must be ignored until Osama is hunted down, and not a second before that. If he is dead, then the recordings of his voice are CIA manufactured fakes, Osama is doing a "Weekend at Bernie's" and Iraq must again be ignored. No matter what, Bush is presumed to be a liar or inept, but his high approval ratings show that most Americans do not believe that to be true. I think the President and the U.S. would be much better served with a dead Osama.

Why couldn't it be a Habib Rich al-Little Osama impersonator? A live Osama would take every opportunity to rub his survival in the Americans face. No new video and poor quality recordings argue strongly for this premise.

In fact I think that in the current tape he says that he will die a martyr this year. So here is how it will be played out IMHO.

His closest followers will go back to the cave where he is pushing up daisies and take the limp body, in all good Islamofacist Nazi Towelhead tradition and when these neanderthals do their next deed, they will leave his body nearby showing the world how he led the attack on the infidels.

That is how he will be percieved by his followers and then the situation gets real sticky, unless we kill all his followers and their entire families so never again will that name of his be given to anything righteous and good from that camel humping society.
