It wasn't billed as "straight" anything. The very first commercial said that the bachelor was not what he appeared to be, it's been advertised as a series of blatant lies from the beginning. That's been part of the fun.
Not to the casual viewer, they think that Evan is a down on his luck contruction worker when in reality he runs a message service in the Los Angeles newspaper and lives in a 2 million dollar beachfromt house!! (and is going for a career in gay wrestling)
This is a con, a subtle con but still one just the same.
