I remember being in NJ on business and when I would hold the doors (like I always do), the women would give me the evil eye, like I was insulting them. Not that I needed another reason to hate it up north.

I have never in my life gotten a bad reaction from a woman for holding a door, or for any other act of chivalry. (Being ruggedly handsome has its advantages!)

I'm raised and living in NJ, and you can hold doors for me and reach things on the top shelf and lift heavy things for me and I will smile and thank you sincerely. We will both enjoy the little interlude of gallantry and the world will be a little better for it.

And yes, I try to do the same services for those in need, and give up my seat to the elderly, pregnant, encumbered, and teach my children the same. Grace does not always come naturally...

My only dilemma: trying to figure out when an elderly gentleman would rather hold the door, or have it held...

another reason to hate it up north.

My job took me around the country, and I decided quite naturally to retire to the South. For the reason you mention.
