60 minutes: Glock VP supports ballistic fingerprinting
60 minutes ^ | February 9, 2003 | self

I didn't watch 60 minutes tonight, but according to several folks who did watch, one of the Vice Presidents of Glock stated he supports ballistic fingerprinting on a national level.

If true, this is a total sellout of gun owners in America.

The worst part about the (hit) piece was the "experts" who laughably tried to assert that violent criminals wouldn't bother going to the trouble to alter their weapon's ballistic signature.

Off the cuff I would say that...

Glock is Austrian and has no cultural sympathy for the American Constitution. We are a market. Period.

Glock has military contracts all over the world. Big dollars.

Glock is diversified into other areas. Cushioning dollars.

Glock is nearly ubiquitous these days as cops militarize their weaponry. Even Barney Fife would carry a Glock today.

American firearms owners are a lucrative segment market, but hardly bread and butter.

You know, most people do not even contemplate the effects of their purchases. We can't even get half of the voters in this country to vote!

I am a small businessman, and I watch the consumers flock to WalMart to buy their shotshells for $3.95 a box instead of paying $4.95 a box at their local gun shop, then crying when that local gun shop closes because the guy at the WalMart sporting goods counter cannot show them how to field strip their Remington.

These same types come to our motorcycle shops to try on helmets and then buy them on the internet at just about our cost, then want us to exchange them if they don't fit right. You can imagine where I'd like to fit that helmet!

This type of consumer greed has all but removed the "service" from retailing, and has destroyed the manufacturing strength of this country.

Another benefit of integrating globalization some might say.

Not me, though.

The VP of Glock has nothing to say unless it is that they have hair triggers, that they are not law enforcement weapons (and are suitable only for military use), and that those little trigger thingies ARE NOT SAFETIES!!!!

Until then, he can just STFU.

I recall Bill Ruger having some funny notions...

I tended to pardon Ruger on the basis of genius being unstable. He was the greatest gun designer since John Browning.
The rest of these pogues are just run of the mill business executives. They get no slack from me.

how hard is it to change the "fingerprint" of a barrel. Could you do it with a coat hanger? just ham it down the barrel to make new striations? Or would it require more?

That's not gonna do it. It is like getting some scars on your finger. It does not destroy the underlieing fingerprint. Wear will remove markings eventually.

Try a bore brush wrapped with a patch and coated with valve grinding compound. Then follow up with finer compounds to polish out the scratches.

My father in law owns an independent garden center. He loves to hear "do they carry that at home depot?" after spending 15-20 minutes helping the lowlife ass. We also love to see people coming in and wondering why their fescue lawn turned brown after following some Home Despot teenager's instructions to use winterizer with simazine. As a funny aside one of his employees got a phone call asking for advice on how to kill a weed in his lawn. The employee could hear a forklift beeping and someone paging the manager of the Garden Center (he used to work for my Father in Law). That guy will be planting a new lawn!

It warms my heart to see these morons ripping some small business man off for his time and then going off and saving 10% on the price. They deserve to get their @$$ ripped. Some items are way more than 10% but they are loss leaders. He can't even carry a decent clay pot selection. The local distrutors stopped selling clay pots because Home Despot was underselling the them. My father in law has to buy whole truckloads and have them shipped. If he runs out of one variety oh well. Home despot carrys one type of basic clay pot. Everybody better be happy with it!

Still not a "sell-out" of the magnitude of the Smith&Wesson/HUD agreement - which BTW has still not been rejected or repudiated by the "new" S&W.

But let me guess: Is this VP of Glock a German or Austrian?

The real problem, besides the customer ripping us off for our time, air conditioning and knowledge, is that here in the San Fernando Valley, I HAVE TO go to Home Depot to buy anything, and wait for price checks and people with the keys to open hardware displays, etc. The time I loose costs me more than the markup I would have paid at Dad's store. Your father-in-law's store is now closed because people want to get more merchandise for their dollar and the heck with service. They want your service and time for free as they give their money to the discounter.

At my motorcycle shop, we will no longer put a bike on a lift unless we sell the parts, tires, accessories, etc. One guy told me,"that's no way to treat your customer." I told him that MY customers buy their tires from ME.

It is kind of irritating when you have 3 or 4 people standing around on a job while you are getting materials!

Your father-in-law's store is now closed because people want to get more merchandise for their dollar and the heck with service.

He still is in business but Home Despot is hurting him. Home Despot is willing to take a loss on their Garden Center. Even more radical is how they treat their suppliers.

At my motorcycle shop, we will no longer put a bike on a lift unless we sell the parts, tires, accessories, etc. One guy told me,"that's no way to treat your customer." I told him that MY customers buy their tires from ME.

He has customers that have the gall to bring stuff from Home Depot and ask him to help them get it together!!!! They say stuff like "I have been shopping here for years"!

I own several Glocks, and given enough time and money, will buy several more. I love em. If Glock officially supports BF, I will write them a letter telling them they have lost me as a customer. No problem with me if they don't care. I don't either.

It would take a little more than a coat hanger but not much. A simple rat tooth file down the barrel a few times, hit the firing pin with some emery paper, and run that file around the extractor and no one would ever be able to trace it.

An even easier way would be to fire a few cases of shells through it. After all, you need to practice regularly anyway.
