All the reviews of Gettysburg complain about the fake beards and Martin Sheen's portrayal of Robert E. Lee. When I saw the movie, I didn't notice that the beards were fake, and I thought Sheen did a good job of acting. I've read that Sheen was brought in at the last minute to play Lee. I thought he did an okay job.
Most of the beards were pretty terrible. Sheen's looked okay, Longstreet's looked like it was hooked over the ears. The worst was probably Armistead's.
What did people want more from Lee in the film? Didn't he have the heart of a woman and the soul of a lion, or some such. I thought Sheen hit it all about right.
I saw the TV promo for G&G last night. I've got my fingers crossed. I saw "Gangs of New York" which also had some glowing reviews and it was just -so- lame.

Borrow it from your local library when it comes out on DVD or video. You are probably already paying a tax for the library.

Turner also has a cameo in the film. Interesting that he noted in his interview last night that he regrets having said what he did about Christians. If this movie is so well done perhaps that is the ultimate apology. Many, if not most viewers, will not make the Turner connection.

I've been very much looking forward to this film already. Both Jeff Shaara and his father Michael Shaara (deceased, wrote "Killer Angels", Pulitzer prize) created the best historical writing I have been privileged to experience. They really personalize history through the individuals involved...

and was kept in a nice safe spot on the far right at Chancellorsville. Among the first to meet Ol' Stonewall up close and personal.

Sen. Robert Byrd, D-WV, former member of the KKK, also has a cameo. I think Sen. Phil Graham, R-TX was supposed to be it in too but had a scheduling problem.

All of you who are boycotting Ted Turner on this one--you're cutting off your nose to spite your face.

I read somewhere that Turner was having a cameo, but that his scene was cut. Is that all you get by putting $60 of your own money into a film?
One of the actors from the movie, the one that plays Stonewall Jackson, was on After Hours with Cal Thomas on Saturday. The footage they showed looked great.
This and Tears of the Sun are two movies I'm really forward to in the next few weeks.

Sheen was awful. He doesn't know how to even
sit on a horse, much less ride one. He managed to look perpetually fearful.
And what WAS that accent? Certainly not Virginian.

The problem with Sheen - who did a passable job but lacked some of the gravitas needed to really pull off Marse Robert - is that I found it impossible to look at him and not think "Martin Sheen." And given my views on Sheen, this proved an insurmountable obstacle.
To take a similar example: if Pearl Harbor had actually been a decent film, it still would have been hobbled by Alec Baldwin playing Jimmy Doolittle.
I'm looking forward to see what Duvall can do with the role.

I forgot about the accent.
Good point.
