This is the transcript from the 6p.m. Ch3 WCAX-TV news.
It's publicity every politician dreams of.....the whole political world was focused on Jim Jeffords nearly two years ago....his declaration of Independence put Senate Democrats in power and derailed the Republicans agenda....
This fall, the GOP regained their power but Jeffords is still reaping the benefits when it comes to fundraising. In the last six months, Jeffords raised 1-point-1 million dollars. (graphic) Contributions Since July 1, 2002 $1,123,090.
That's on top of the half million dollars, the Republican turned Independent already had on hand. Since aligning himself with the Democrats nearly two years ago, Jeffords has raised 1 point 6 million dollars. (graphic) Contributions Since Jump $1,663,803.
Jeffords chief of staff says the Senator is still popular around the country and many of the contributions included notes from people saying the jump gave them hope things would be better. Jeffords has spent money to make money.
He has spent nearly 4-hundred thousand dollars on consultants--money used to fluff up his campaign warchest. It's a fund that has nearly 1 point 3 million dollars in it. (graphic) (Jeffords Cash on Hand) $1,264,597. and Jeffords does NOT face re-election for another 4 years. Vermont's senior senator is just gearing up his relection effort. Senator Patrick Leahy raised 25-thousand dollars in the last six months....and has 2-hundred and 15-thousand dollars on hand...... (graphic leahy) Cash on Hand $215,503. It's clear Jeffords jump hit a cord across the country....and to put his fundraising effort in perspective.
Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean has raised 3-hundred and 14-thousand dollars in the last year in his Presidential run... Jeffords has raised 5 times that amount. -3-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Money is critical in campaigns ... it pays for mailings, and print and t-v advertising ... shaping the image of candidates.. Jeffords chief of staff says Jeffords plans on running for reelection..she doubts they will have a democratic opponent but expects a Republican to run against him.
I thought he might take a stab at Governor until we elected a REAL Republican, Jim Douglas against whom he would get killed in a primary....so....maybe it's just retire to the farm with his Senate and Navy (Reserve) Captain's pensions......and whatever is left of his con job million!
