Jogger murder: new clue (Mideasterners seen running away)
Evening Standard ^ | 5 February 2003 | Justin Davenport, Nigel Rosser and Patrick McGowan

Two men are being hunted by police today after a dramatic breakthrough in the search for the killers of jogger Margaret Muller.

The men were spotted sprinting from Victoria Park in Hackney moments after the American artist was brutally stabbed to death.

A witness, who was on his way to work, told detectives the men ran from the rose garden area of the park, where the 27-year-old artist was attacked at about 8am on Monday, towards Cawley Gate.

This is very sad. She was a promising young artist.

I wonder if the murderer owns any of her work?

Nope. According to the article the two men seen running away were mideastern. Here is a link to an interesting article about Margaret Muller.

That was kind of a snotty statement.

Here is a link to another article about Margaret Muller. In this article is this quote:

Artist Lucinda Metcalfe, who graduated from Slade at the same time, said: "She was a tremendously talented painter. She had such a great future ahead of her. What's happened is awful. At Slade I got to know her because we are both Christians. We would sometimes sit together and have conversations about God. She sometimes struggled with her Christianity but she had very firm beliefs."

Yes, I did. And I had to wonder if the men knew her. She did not normally jog there, so they wouldn't have waited there for her. I would also think they wouldn't know whether or not she was an American unless they knew her or of her. Unless, of course, they were just aiming for anyone. But this was not just a bum who tried to rape and then kill anyone who came along.

This really saddens me. My daughter is getting ready to go into art and she hopes to go to a college that has an active overseas program into which they try to place everyone. I've already said I'm not sure the foreign travel now is a good idea...

I know. Our family lived in Fairfax during the time Margaret Muller was going to George Mason High School. She is the same age as my son. My youngest daughter is artistic and wants to go to California for a design internship next year. I don't even want her to go there! Of course, we are a military family and have lived overseas and our kids traveled with us and we had some wonderful trips. I just don't think it is very safe to go overseas now.

Either:
1) This was a random act of violence............
2) ......or it was not; meaning, she was targeted.

******A 'foreign' housemaid or other worker in the hotel could be keeping tabs on comings and goings and passing the information to 'accomplices'******Foreign-nationals could be keeping a vigil on the main entrances to hotels looking for guests that leave on foot rather than a taxi.******

It pays to be a little paranoid even in Western European countries. Another reason why I try to keep a low profile when I go overseas...........................

Recent Berlin-trip account

A group of students at my husband's college just returned from a ten-day course in Holland. He said they faced anti-Americanism. I would have loved for my dau to experience Europe and they things I didn't. But unfortunately, not now. My heart goes out to this family.

Interesting account of your trip to Berlin and to Celle. We lived in Germany for three years and just returned last summer. The only time I ever encountered anti-Americanism was after 911 outside the army posts. There were some small demonstrations but not very many people involved. There are quite a few articles on the Evening Standard about Margaret Muller and they are all interesting and informative and so sad.

Yes, I agree. I don't think it is a good time for any American to go overseas.

When I was in Berlin 2 years ago and a riot broke out in front of the Brandenburg gate when a hundreds of Nazis showed up to celebrate the anniversary of Hitler taking power and the birth of the Third Reich. Next, hundreds of Greens started showing up on the other side of the street..........slogans and insults were exchanged........fistfights broke out.........more people showed up..........running battles were initiated.........police came and started shooting tear gas.........the whole Unter der Linden and Alexanderplatz area of East Berlin was shut down. I was playing tourist at the time nearby and got the hell outta there.

I was in Berlin 4 years at the beginning of Klinton's Yugoslavia bombing and there were some large demonstrations organized by the Greens and Communist Parties etc. that I stayed the hell away from.
