Police: Man admitted to killing doughnut-delivery woman
02/04/2003
An 18-year-old Rowlett man lured a doughnut-delivery woman to his mother's home to rob her and then beat her to death with a baseball bat when she had no money, a detective testified Tuesday.
Rowlett police Detective Keith Needham testified during an evidentiary hearing that Anthony Doyle, charged with capital murder, wrote out a 10-page confession. Mr. Doyle wrote that he'd been out of work and needed money when he attacked 37-year-old Hyun Mi Cho, the detective said.
Ms. Cho, an employee of Chaha Donuts, was found Jan. 16 in a trash bin near Mr. Doyle's home. A friend of Mr. Doyle told police that the 18-year-old was driving a car that belonged to Ms. Cho. Mr. Doyle told the friend he'd gotten the car by "hitting a lick," a slang term for robbery, Detective Needham testified.

After the hearing, County Criminal Court Judge Phil Barker forwarded the case to a grand jury and increased Mr. Doyle's bond from $500,000 to $750,000.
The murder is Rowlett's first since 1999, when Michael Hierro was killed in a shotgun attack in his driveway. Clint Shelton, husband of Dallas lawyer Catherine Shelton, was convicted of the crime.
Detective Needham said the Jan. 16 crime started when Mr. Doyle called Chaha Donuts to order a dozen doughnuts and a dozen burritos for delivery. He tried to disguise his voice to sound like a woman, the investigator said.
When Ms. Cho arrived with the order, Mr. Doyle hid the bat behind his body and invited her in, the detective said. Mr. Doyle told police that he asked Ms. Cho for her money and then hit her twice in the head with the bat when she said she didn't have any, Detective Needham said.
Mr. Doyle told the detective that he believed Ms. Cho was still alive when he put her in a neighbor's trash bin.
"Her arms were moving, and she was trying to get up," Detective Needham said, quoting Mr. Doyle.
A woman found Ms. Cho in her trash bin and called police, who began to canvas the neighborhood. When officers got to Mr. Doyle's home, his sister told police she had just arrived home and was upset by a brown wet spot in the carpet. Police obtained permission to search the house and found blood spatter on the walls, Detective Needham said.
Officers arrested Mr. Doyle at a friend's home. He had been released from the Texas Youth Commission last year, after serving time for probation violations in connection with convictions for assault, harassment and evading arrest, court officials told the judge.
