Your theory of saving it for later has already been thoroughly refuted in this thread http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/833505/posts . You might want to read it and learn something.

Actually, both you and Stalin made some good points...

My point isn't that we don't explore in ANWR, it's that we hold off on development until we actually need the reserves. Most of those economic benefits - in which Alaska reaps most of - that you mention can still be realized in say, 20 years when we actually need to produce those reserves.

Sure – I’d love to cut off ALL foreign imports so we aren’t dependent. The problem is the prices rise to $30+/BBL where I can make money drilling in the GOM, the soccer moms will scream because they don’t want to pad $2+ a gallon for gas.

I'd rather have a regime change in the most of our current suppliers (Did you know that Venezuela and Mexico supply most of our imported oil, not the Arabian Peninsula?). We are about to see in Iraq and I don't doubt that we'll see more changes in Iraq's neighbors (which, by the way, is the real reason the House of Saudi doesn't want us in Iraq...)

As to the comment “It must be the new envirowienie/disrupter anti-ANWR drilling script.” You gotta love it when you can’t have an intellectual discussion without the name calling. I’m actually an “earth rapist” for a major O&G company and damn proud of it!

"How about because it takes care of our own.
Support American jobs... Buy American!

we can buy it cheap from foreign countries and deplete their reserves...

I don't know about depleting their resources, but we sure have filled their pockets with American dollars some of which finance terror."

Sound great if you can do it... Replace oil in your argument with another commodity - let's say clothes or plastic goods. Let's see - a whole bunch of those products come from China and are sold at Walmart. Go ahead and see how many people stop buying those goods even when they know how good China's human right's record is... Big, bad oil is just an easy target until you hit people in the pocket book. I buy American when I can but I challenge you to put your money-where-your-mouth-is and buy only American-made products. I bet 99.9% of Americans wouldn't do it because it's an inconvience to them...

Being in the O&G bidness you are probably familiar with the age of the TAPS and what it would take to rebuild or replace it after the twenty year wait that you abdicate. Those costs alone are why I believe we should drill ANWR now and produce that oil before the TAPS needs to be retired. Then we can concentrate on the offshore fields in the gulf and off the west coast, where transportation of the product isn't a major problem.

I didn't mean to insult you. It only seems ironic that I was having a discussion with two anti-ANWR folks on the same talking points on two different threads. I'll go get my tinfoil hat.

No offense taken...

Yes, I'm very familar with the age of the TAPS and the fact that once Prudoe can't output enough to keep it full, it begins to degrade. My contention is that if you can use up someone else's resources without using your own, you're securing a resource for some later time when you actually might need it.

It comes down to plain economics - would I rather spend $5-7 bucks a barrel in some foreign land and deplete their resources when at the same time I can't make a buck at $25/BBL in the GOM.

Politics always comes into play when $$ is involved. There is absolutely no economic reason to put in a gas pipeline from the North Slope to the US that follows the TAPS when you can build the "Northern Route" thru Canada except for politics. The Alaskan congressmen want the royalties for shipment via the State while the Canadian route makes more sense since the proposed route will actually take the pipeline past several other fields in Canada. Common sense and economics don't always win. Look at the stupid route of the AIOC pipeline from Azeribaijan to Ceylon - doen't make much sense except that Turkey want's it's cut of the royalities... Don't even get me started about the proposed pipeline across Afghanistan...

I came up with a better analogy as I drove my gas-guzzling SUV home... I want to buy a shovel and I go to Walmart/Target/Home Depot. I can either buy the "cheap one" at $15 (it's made in China) or (if I'm lucky to even find) one made in the USA for $40. Damn the principals - I gotta have money to buy some beer! That's the true American system of a free market economy.

You can make a statement and only buy American but most times you don't even have a choice! Even if you did, would you do it? Sorry but I think that most people won't...

Nothing's better than an animal rights "fanatic" wearing leather shoes... :)
