My local news affiliate seems only to remember the Challenger accident and referred to today's events as the "second" tragedy for the Space Program. I was so mad, I had to turn the channel. Ignorance is rampant. Reagan looked for guidance from his predecssors, just as Bush will today.

Fascinating document! Thanks for posting! I note from it that Presideent Johnson did not order the flag at half-mast after
Apollo I. Do you recall if President Reagan gave such an order following the
Challenger? My flag is out, but it is not at half-mast. I think that's what the Columbia crew would have wanted -- pride in their sacrifice, not tears for their deaths.
I remember that - I was pregnant with my first baby (yes, I'm old.)
Gus Grissom's career in space ended in tragedy, his first flight ended in controversy. His family has spent years trying to clear his name. If you watch the movie, "THe Right Stuff", you will see it portrayed very well.
In fact, this may be a good movie to watch tonight - will remind us all how dangerous it is and how brave are our astronauts.
