Dr. Laurel Clark, one of the astronauts, was a Racine, Wisconsin native. Our first ever astronaut in space, she had become a great source of pride in our community. God bless the astronauts and their families.I understand your pride and now your grief. Roger Chaffee (Apollo I) was from Grand Rapids and it was devastating when he died. We had a wonderful planetarium built and dedicated to his memory, which included many items that he had donated to the public museum.
My prayers go out for the family members who have been so tragically affected by todays events.

Israeli on board and Palestine Texas is going to really bring out the conspiracy theories...for a long time to come

"I skimmed over there to see what everyone was talking about. I have never been on that site before and I read a few things. They are the angriest and most vicious group of people ever! OMG I have never seen such nastiness. Even in a tragedy they have to be evil!" Might want to point this out to the idiotic advertisers (Radio Shack comes to mind), that pulled their support from Rush. I for one will never, ever buy anything from Radio Shack again.

NASA (news - web sites) security officers raise the American flag to half staff at the Kennedy Space Center (news - web sites) in Cape Canaveral, Fla., after the Space Shuttle Columbia apparently broke up over Texas, Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, en route to its scheduled landing in Florida. The president has supposedly said that there is not way it is terrorism. I hope that is an accurate statement. I am inclined to believe that.

"Have you ever been to Texas? There are huge areas of unincorporated land.
Let me spell my point out to you,
There was an astronaut from Israel onboard, the Shuttle exploded over TX. The media finds Palestine TX and then pin points it as the location of the explosion.
Then some people here are not smart enough to figure out that this is pure garbage. Go see how big Palestine TX is, I have. How high was the Craft? Please.... refuse to be duped

Thank you for the crew bio's.

Gads, what's with you guys blaming OMDP in Palmdale.
The ground crews at KSC do more with the vehicle after delivery and there's more than enough blame to go around.
Pointing fingers at Palmdale is totally poor.

I understand the rationale for allowing DU postings here, but I for one do not care to muddy my mind with them. This tragedy is too important and heart-rending to even give them one second of consideration.
I cannot imagine the grief level of the families and all those who knew the astronauts personally.
God give them comfort as we all share in that grief. And may God give our President the strength and ability to comfort a grieving nation.

do you mind not posting hate? Let them fester with their conspiracy theories and fringe x-file like stories...

The report on NBC said President Bush was traveling back via car. Why not fly? What's the weather like in the DC area? It's misting here, light rain. Nothing anywhere near serious enough to warrant grounding helicopters.
Remember that Blair allegedly met Bush at the White House yesterday, rather than at Camp David, as planned, because of the weather. The weather then wasn't that bad either, I thought.
I suspect security reasons which they won't publicize. There have been strange searches in the Catoctin Mountains, near Camp David, the past week or two. The excuse then has been that it's connected to the anthrax investigation.
