Terrorists in Italy may have been plotting to assassinate Britain's head of the armed forces, Admiral Sir Michael Boyce, according to reports.
A photograph of the Chief of Defence Staff, circled in red, along with explosives were discovered during a raid on a suspected al-Qaida cell in Naples.
The items were seized as Italian police arrested 28 Pakistanis after a dawn raid on an apartment in the city when 1.5 kilos of explosives were discovered, Italian news agency Ansa said.
It is understood that Sir Michael, the most senior military adviser to Prime Minister Tony Blair, is due to visit Nato's southern headquarters in Naples later this month.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence was unable to confirm the find but said: "If this is the case I have no doubt the Italian police would pass the information on to their British counterparts.
"In his position, Sir Michael knows he must be a possible target for terrorists. I am sure any relevant information would be assessed by his security advisers who would decide whether any changes in arrangements are necessary."
Go on Al Qaeda, try and make our lads more eager to dispose of you than they already are.
Regards, Ivan
