Police Unable to Confirm Whether Clerk Saw Missing California Woman (Laci Peterson)

Jan. 31 — Police say they are unable to confirm whether a store clerk saw missing, pregnant California woman Laci Peterson sometime in December.

At a press conference today, Longview, Wash., police said they had reviewed between 40 and 55 hours of surveillance videotape taken from a convenience store between Dec. 24 and Jan. 19 and had failed to find any evidence indicating that Peterson had been there. Police reviewed the tapes after a clerk came forward late last week to say she believes she saw a missing, pregnant woman. Police said they are continuing to interview the clerk. Meanwhile, they added, a second woman has since come forward and claimed she has also seen Peterson.

‘I Was Kidnapped’

On Thursday, the Daily News of Longview reported that the clerk told police a pregnant woman came into Market Place in this southwest Washington town and said: "This is serious. I was kidnapped. Call the authorities when I leave."

The 45-year-old clerk said she intended to call police but became distracted and forgot, according to a police report. Late last week, the clerk was watching CNN and saw a story about Laci Peterson, 27, who vanished from Modesto, Calif., on Christmas Eve.

She told police the report triggered her memory of an unusual pair of customers who passed through her checkout line. The woman appeared to be in her 20s and in a late stage of pregnancy; Peterson was due to give birth to a boy on Feb. 10. The clerk said the woman was a "classic beauty" with sleek brown hair.

The woman was accompanied by a much older man with "strong features" and a ruddy complexion, the clerk reported.

After the man stepped out of line to get something he forgot, the clerk remarked to the woman that she should be wearing a coat on such a chilly day. The woman told the clerk she didn't have time to take a coat because she was kidnapped. She also told the clerk that the man had a weapon.

Why Didn’t She Come Forward Sooner?

The clerk told police she wasn't sure whether to take the woman seriously.

When the man returned, he asked what the two talked about while he was gone, the police report says.

"She said you kidnapped her," the clerk said.

The clerk said the statement seemed to make the man angry, and she teasingly added that her husband always kidnapped her to take her to dinner. The man relaxed and laughed.

"Yeah, I guess I kidnapped her," she recalled him saying.

After they left, the clerk unsuccessfully tried to find a phone book to call police, then became distracted and forgot about the incident. She told police she feels terrible about it now.

Scott Peterson, 30, has told investigators he last saw his wife the morning of Christmas Eve. Police have not named him as a suspect in his wife's disappearance, but attention has focused on him, in part because he admits he told his wife he was having an affair shortly before she vanished

Good heavens! Is ABC saying there's another woman in Washington state that saw her?

Greta says she has on verified source that Scott did not have pics of him and his girlfriend, and that the pics were taken at someone's home (Amber's?), not at her workplace, as first stated.

Look for a trail from this clerk to Scott's lawyer, I think she simply set up a story to create doubt in the minds of the jury, should this ever come to trial.

The fact that the man was "definitely older" appears to clear Scott, but people being kidnapped who are left alone do not wait for their kidnapper to come back, they run like a rabbit. The clerk's story is pretty unbelievable unless she is mentally challenged.

Another reason to doubt that story is that Laci's friends say she was pretty feisty. She wouldn't have just stood there if left alone like that. I don't think she would have, anyway.

Having lived in Washington state...and knowing the number of nuts up there...this story is believable. There are several questions. Did Laci ever chat over the internet and possibly bump into someone from Washington? When did the Washington women see Laci...cause it has to be after the 25th(its a 15 hour drive from California to eastern Washington)? Did any of the blood on the floor of the kitchen (which has appeared in several stories) come up matching neither Laci or Scott?

If the second woman's story comes somewhat positive...then we have to go with this weird idea that a backwoods idiot from Washington needs a female (either to take care of him or to be a sex-slave). Picking her at random? No, I really doubt. Laci probably went into chat rooms and he casually asked questions...and she probably answered enough to confirm what town she lived in and what kinda car she drove. He merely drove down and two or three days around town...found her place and waited.

There is also another possibility. Could Scott have found this guy and simply 'invited' him to come down and take Laci? It is strange Scott picks the 24th to be gone fishing. But this might have been part of the plan anyway...Scott has an alibi...and the other guy gets his woman. Scott knows that nothing can be connected to him...he gets the insurance money after 12 months. The cops will never be able to connect him to the episode, especially if a 3rd party blood sample is found in the kitchen...my bet.

Yes I agree, there would be many things she could have done, to gain more attention in a public place; Grab some cash from the register, take off some of her clothes, yell rape, fire, holdup. She did not need the clerk who was fumbling to find a police phone number. I am not surprised to find no video confirmation.

Excellent question Mr. Cola Drink on Frozen Water Cube. I suspect Mulder is on his trail right now. I hope Scully will be able to assist in the capture. These Aliens are tricky devils.............
