The water battles in the Klamath Basin reached a peak in 2001, when federal marshals were called in to guard irrigation headgates closed to conserve water for endangered Lost River and shortnosed suckers in Upper Klamath Lake and threatened coho salmon in the Klamath River. After a year of silence on the suckers because it didn't serve them to mention them during the Salmon war on the lower Klamath the Sucker is suddenly revealient to their cause again.
