Work begins on Bush Turnpike extension
01/31/2003
FARMERS BRANCH - Crews will break ground Friday on the missing link of the President George Bush Turnpike.
The future 5.2 mile stretch of highway will extend from Interstate 635 in Irving to Interstate 35E in Carrollton. When complete, that segment will create a turnpike link from Garland to D/FW Airport.
The $428 million addition is a little behind schedule, according to the lead engineer on the project, but will open in three years.

"This was a very environmentally challenging corridor through here - coordination with a lot of agencies, from cities to the federal government, so it's taken a little more time, but we're not that much behind," Mark Bouma, NTTA chief of engineering, said.
"It's going to look just like the rest of the Bush Turnpike, six lanes of roadway and it could eventually be widened to eight."
Other roadway projects for the future include extending the Bush Turnpike to Interstate 30, extending the Dallas North Tollway to Frisco, and improvements to Southwest Parkway in Fort Worth.
