Now, as we drive toward the 10,779-foot Shibar Pass, the gateway to Bamiyan [Afghanistan], we pass ruined Hazara villages, relics of Taliban genocide; our vehicle, ominously, is the only one on the once-busy road. When we arrive in Bamiyan, we find most of the town lying in rubble. Then I take a second look. Everywhere rebuilding is going on: people are making bricks from mud, conjuring their houses and shops back to life. Farmers are loading up trucks with potatoes to sell in Kabul. U.N. vehicles, too, scurry about, part of a massive international campaign to bring Bamiyan back to life. A contingent of U.S. Army Special Operations troops are helping build bridges and schools while they also keep order."
Excerpt
"On September 9, 2001, in the far northern town of Khojabahuddin, two Arab terrorists posing as journalists killed the nationalist Afghan leader Ahmadshah Massood with a bomb concealed in a battery pack. Massood and his fellow Tajik tribesmen from the Panjsher Valley had led the war against the Soviets in the 80's, turning back six major Soviet offenses and descending from the mountains to attack Soviet convoys headed south to Kabul. When the foreign Muslims of Al Qaeda and their Afghan/Pakistani Taliban allies tried to take over the country in the chaos following the Soviet withdrawal, Massood and his followers fought them too."
Excerpt
"Now that the United States, allied with Massood's fighters and other anti-Taliban forces, has swept the Taliban away, the martyred Massood is being hailed as the saviour of his nation." -- Smithsonian Magazine, Rob Schultheis, Feb. 2003

I wish this article came out a few months ago when the Taliban in tennis shoes made her obtuse comment about how Muslims didn't like America because we didn't do things like help them build roads and schools. Maybe one of her staffers can read this to her (really slowly) and explain it to her.
She is a complete embarrassment. I hope Rep. Jennifer Dunn wipes her out in 2004.

Excellent - thanks for the post. One of the few articles about the good things going on in Afghanistan now. Where there was horror, now there is hope!
How awesome is this country under the leadership of President Bush. Pray for him!

Surprisingly, the magazine starts out with a short article about Bush Sr. written by a former Reagan/Bush speechwriter. It has this great picture of Bush Sr. visiting the troops just before Desert Storm.

"Stupid left-wing female dog. She and that women class of '92 can go to you-know-where." Ditto for our two California senators, Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein. Boxer's up for re-election in '04 and for heaven's sake we will be a better nation if we defeat this putrid, evil-minded, offensive leftist.

Stupid left-wing female dog. She and that women class of '92 can go to you-know-where. My exact thoughts also.

Thanks, I also looked around on their site, right after I realized how lazy that link request made me appear.

Also, a preview of the article has the following quote from the author:
"What do you do when your driver swerves off the road and drives out into minefields to prove that signs warning of mines are too alarmist?"
I'm sure there are some dangerous minefields in Afghanistan and some innocents who have been hurt or killed, but I'm sick of that mantra from the left that we need to ban the use of mines that protect our troops.
The libs also use this issue to attack Bush for being a unilateralist by not supporting a landmine ban. Doesn't seem like this local was that concerned.

Hey thanks, it was a labor of love. She's an insult to anyone with more than an ounce of common sense.
