With dozens of uniformed firefighters and gun-toting policemen looking down from the gallery, the state Assembly conducted its first extensive debate and series of votes on the state's immense budget crisis Tuesday.
The four-hour-plus session was, for the most part, what one grizzled veteran of the Capitol termed a "PBD," shorthand for "pointless budget drill." Democrats presented a series of bills that they said would help close the multibillion-dollar budget gap by cutting spending and raising taxes on cars, and Republicans, for the most part, opposed them as either cutting too little or taxing too much. But since Democrats outnumber the Republicans, all the bills passed handily after the requisite amount of partisan hand-wringing and finger-pointing.

Do it anyway and let the courts figure it out. A court injunction against the Rats while it is litigated is probably good for 5 years.
