Texas Republican Party Platform Thread 111 (Pledge of Allegiance in Public Schools)
Brown County GOP Website ^ | June, 2002 | Republican Party of Texas

The Republican Party of Texas Platform has been MUCH in the news of late because it is a CONSERVATIVE document and, as such, VERY controversial. I thought it would be an instructive exercise, for those of us who wish to do so here, to go through it plank by plank and see where we stand on these issues. Pursuant to that, I will post ONE plank of the Platform, every few days and anyone who wishes to can state their views as to that particular part of the platform.

Today, under the heading Strengthening Families and Promoting a Freer Society sub-heading Educating our Children we find the following plank :

Pledge of Allegiance in Public Schools - The Party believes that students should be taught flag etiquette and should be led in the Pledge of Allegiance, the Texas pledge, the national anthem and patriotic songs on a daily basis so as to ensure that the loyal and patriotic spirit of Texas' and of America's past is preserved and passed on to our children.

I have decided to score myself by assigning a score of between 0 and 10 points to each of the planks! 10 means I agree with EVERYTHING in it. 0 means I agree with NOTHING in it.

10 points brings my running score to this point to 1006 of a possible 1110.

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the cheap chinese imports for which it stands, one nation, divisible, with confiscatory tax rates and a bloated beaureaucracy for all."

Sometimes, what you do is more important than what you say.

I agree that the Pledge should be recited on a regular basis, perhaps daily. I'm not so sure about singing patriotic songs on a daily basis.

But maybe that's just because I'm a lousy singer.

Found this at: http://www.texaspolicecentral.com/plrdge.html

Pledge of Allegiance to the State Flag

(a) The pledge of allegiance to the state flag is, "Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one and indivisible."

(b) The pledge of allegiance to the state flag should be rendered by all present except those in uniform by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Individuals who are not in uniform and who are wearing a headdress that is easily removeable should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, with the hand over the heart. Individuals in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute.

(c) The pledge of allegiance to the state flag may be recited at all public and private meetings at which the pledge of allegiance to the United States flag is recited and at state historical events and celebrations.

(d) The pledge of allegiance to the state flag should be recited after the pledge of allegiance to the United States flag if both are recited.
