[history]
Sen. Zell Miller, Georgia Democrat, says he is in favor of tax cuts, but it is also time to put the federal government on a diet.
"We now have the biggest, most expensive federal government in history. Federal employees are thicker than maggots on a rotting carcass. So, why not start by abolishing vacant positions in every department except Defense and Homeland Security?" Mr. Miller writes in an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal.

Lots of us have been screaming this for years. I'm glad to see at least one senator aggrees with us...even if it is a democrat.

Why is this guy a democrat anyway?
To: johniegrad
With the GA midterms over, expect him to vote as if GA has two GOP senators and not one until he leaves.
To: johniegrad
Sad part is, why is he retiring? :-(

He's served in office for much of the 1990s and 21st century. He's 72 years old or so and wants to spend time with his grandchildren.

Maybe a DINO. I like what he said there.
I wouldn't be too particulary upset to see gozillions of unemployed gov't employees standing in the unemployment line, then looking for REAL significant jobs.
To: SC_Republican
Don't you just wish they would put their money where their mouth is? I keep hoping.

He's right.
Republicans love big government as much as the Democrats do.

Republicans love big government as much as the Democrats do. Yet another ridiculous "there's no difference between the two parties" post.

I never said there was "no difference", but, my post is true. Do you deny it?

Absolutely I deny it. The GOP offers tax cuts, the Dems offer spending increases.
Are there Pubbies who like spending and budget increases? Sure. And they routinely get blasted by other Republicans for doing it.
There is a significant fiscal difference between the two parties, even if neither meets your expectations.

The proof is in the pudding.
GOP controlled Senate and House and White House.
Think we'll see a smaller budget than last year?

That's not proof. The question is whether the budget would be the same if the Dems controlled the same. I think we both know the answer to that rhetorical question.

It's not proof? LOL...the fact that the budget will grow by leaps and bounds under a GOP WH, GOP House and GOP Senate isn't proof that they are Big Spenders? If that isn't proof, what is? Their words?
Umm, actions speak louder than words. They're great at talking about shrinking the budget, but when it comes to actually doing it, they DON'T.

Just goes right over your head, doesn't it? Either that or you intentionally ignore the point that refutes your rather ridiculous claim.

You ignore the PROOF.
Don't tell me that the actual budget they pass isn't proof, because, it's the ONLY evidence either way.
If the GOP truly wanted to shrink the budget, THEY WOULD.
But, they DON'T want to shrink the budget.
Don't tell me again that they want a smaler federal budget.

Don't tell me again that they want a smaler federal budget. I never said they did. You, however, did say this:
Republicans love big government as much as the Democrats do.
...which you have been conveniently ignoring. Can't say that I blame you. I'd be embarassed, too.

There is a significant fiscal difference between the two parties, even if neither meets your expectations. The Democrats are tax and spend. The Republicans are borrow and spend. Zell Miller sounds a lot more like Reagan than the president, two people who have put principle ahead of politics.
