Terrorists beheaded a civilian at village Dhok in Thanna Mandi area last night. The victim has been identified as Haqim Din son of Fazal Din, a resident of Dhok.

Police said 36-year old Fazal Din had left the house yesterday at 1430 hours for a shop. However, he didn’t return to the house. His body was found in a surrounding forest area this morning.

They said the civilian was reported to have been kidnapped by the terrorists and beheaded. No reasons could be ascertained behind his killing. Thanna Mandi police was investigating the case.

POONCH, Jan 22: The historic Mata Vaishnodevi temple, located at City Chowk in heart of the City here, suffered extensive damage in a devastating fire in the wee hours of this morning. Sabotage was suspected to be behind the fire incident in the century old temple.

A large idol of Mata Vaishnodevi, however, survived the damage.

Official sources said the fire was noticed in the ancient Vaishnodevi temple at City Chowk, also called as Pandita Mohalla, at 0115 hours by a ‘Chowkidar’. He sounded local people and police. Two Fire Brigades immediately rushed to the temple and started a fire fighting operation.

Local people in the area moved out of their houses as sky rocketing flames, emanating out of the temple building, threatened to spread to an adjoining liquor shop. However, the Fire Brigades succeeded in bringing the fire under control after about one and a half hour.

Roof of the temple suffered extensive damage in the fire. Remaining part of the structure as well as idols didn’t suffer much damage in the fire. Effective fire fighting operation by the Fire Brigade personnel led by Sub Officer Tarlok Singh prevented the fire from further spreading to the liquor shop as it could have caused a major tragedy. Police parties led by DySP Headquarters Manjeet Singh and SHO Surjeet Dutta also joined the fire fighting operation.

Tension flared up in the town here as report of a fire in Mata Vaishnodevi temple spread like a wild fire. A large number of people gathered near the temple. Sanatan Dharam Sabha president L C Shastri also visited the spot and strongly denounced the fire incident. He demanded a high level inquiry into the fire incident to bring the culprits to book.

Reliable police sources, when contacted, confirmed that the possibility of a sabotage behind the fire was not ruled out. They said that a case in the fire incident has been registered at Poonch police station for further investigations.

Repair work on the temple was expected to start shortly. The temple is widely reverred in the town and is daily visited by a large number of devotees.
