Treasury Nominee Snow Had 1982 DUI Charge
Tue January 21, 2003 09:43 PM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House acknowledged on Tuesday that Treasury Secretary nominee John Snow had been arrested in 1982 on a driving-under-the-influence charge and had a 1988 child support dispute with his wife but said it would stand by him for the position.
"Both of the facts were known to the White House and we provided them to the Senate and the president looks forward to the hearings on Treasury-designate Snow and believes he will make an outstanding secretary," said White House spokesman Ari Fleischer. "This doesn't change anything."
The information was provided to the Senate Finance Committee as part of the confirmation process for Snow, who President Bush picked in December to replace Paul O'Neil who was forced to resign by the president as part of an overall strategy to replace his economic team.
Included in the documentation was information about the 1982 driving charge that Fleischer said had been dismissed or thrown out of court and the 1988 child support settlement.

I fail to see how this matters if he has cleaned up his act. Reuters is digging up dirt to scuttle the nominee?

Precisely. I have to wonder if it's OK to ever make a mistake in this world without the perfection police catching up with you.
What a joke.

The story is going to make the rounds. AP covering now, but won't amount to much.
Hell, wasn't GWB still boozing himself back around '82? ;)

This didn't come out just now by coincidence.

I have to wonder if it's OK to ever make a mistake in this world without the perfection police catching up with you. Only if you're an elite.
If a lowly peasant makes a mistake, they're in deep sh*t.

BFD! Charges are NOT convictions. In any event, I would guess that >half of the house/ senate members can boast the same!

Did Hillary find this in one of her FBI files? If this is the best she can do, it's pretty pathetic.

Is Ted Kennedy on the committee that confirms? I would love to see him question Snow about this.

I have it on good authority that there's an unreported library fine in the fourth grade also. We just can't be too careful about the people we have in public office these days.
What're these people? Nuts?

BTW, a DUI conviction will NOT cost a Dr. her license, a nurse his license (note the politically correct gender designators?). Nor a politicial the opportunity to run for office. It won't force a realtor out of business (in most states as I understand it) and most of the time, you will not rot in prison for it.
All of the above do NOT apply if you are a conservative republican!

Gee, this guy is human-surely Bush should find a member of some other species for this position. (SARCASM, just for the purpose clarification.)

That term might actually be an understatement!

Gimmee a f***in break! A 20 year old dismissed DUI charge and a child support beef ( which I will bet was in the throes of a nasty divorce). Are we back to the concept of original and permanent sin?

OMG! 1982? Why, that's only 20 years ago! Geologically, 20 years is less then a fraction of a second. Why, if only a fraction of a second ago, this fellow was driving drunk, there's not telling what he might do next.
In fact, "next" isn't even on the scale. I'll bet he's a lizard alien, or something, here to enlsave mankind and drink the the blood of virgins.
