ABC NEWS WARNS: DON'T LET DRUDGE BECOME OUR ASSIGNMENT EDITOR
A new warning has been issued by a credentialed corporate journalist! Beware the DRUDGE REPORT!
"Can't we all agree that we will check stuff out before we let Drudge become our assignment editor this cycle?" begged ABC NEWS political chief Mark Halperin Tuesday morning in The Note.
Halperin's lecture ["Reporters should know better...be more careful"] comes as political news moves from flatline to pulse in the coming seasons, and the race to be first and fresh with information voters will want to know intensifies.
On the eve of his trip to Dubuque, Iowa this weekend, this space featured quotes made by presidential hopeful John Kerry back in 1996.
"I hate going to places like Austin and Dubuque to raise large sums of money. But I have to," Kerry told the BOSTON GLOBE.
The unearthed quotes, which are found on the LEXIS-NEXIS service, ignited mild controversy, landing on Page One of the local Dubuque, Iowa newspaper -- two days running.
Cries that the quotes were taken out of context became the rage.
[Yes, if Kerry had said he hated going to places like Boston and New York City to raise large sums of money, residents of Dubuque would not have had any reason to raise their eyebrows.]
"But the question IS begged: who sent that to Drudge," ABC NEWS Halperin demanded to know. "Can't we all agree that we will check stuff out before we let Drudge become our assignment editor this cycle? Sometimes he is right, but sometimes
"
He does not wait for ABC NEWS to approve and certify the news.

Did this happen right after Drudge decided to go with the Ritter story?

Gee, Mark, maybe the best way to avoid that is to FIND THE STORIES YOURSELVES, rather than only covering it when Drudge's reports FORCE YOUR HAND.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Is this in reality an effort by ABC to tell affiliates around the country to ignore the Ritter reports?

The main stream media does not get it. Things have changed. Five million people log on to Drudge every day. Thats probably more than watches ABC News with Jennings every night. It is obvious the established media is running scared.

That's spot on. A lot of Freepers like to knock ole Matt- but he is changing the way the "truth" is found, handled and disseminated to the masses. The big boys find they no longer have a monopoly on the flow and tempo of information and they don't like it one damned bit.

The eggshell is already cracked. The Ritter story is certainly proof that the left no longer owns the information business.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Is this in reality an effort by ABC to tell affiliates around the country to ignore the Ritter reports? There is certainly a concerted effort to keep it localized. All the local affiliates in Albany are covering the story, and yet, though Ritter is a national figure, the story is largely bottled up in Albany and its suburbs.
I suspect this means that there is much more just under the surface, and that media favorite political figures could get splashed if the story grows legs.

"Can't we all agree that we will check stuff out before we let Drudge become our assignment editor this cycle?" What he really means is that they should check their Democratic Party talking points memo first.
To: TLBSHOW
But it's ok to have the New York Times as your assignment editor?

Drudgery: A good thing
"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world, but the unreasonable man tries to adapt to the world to him--therefore, all progress depends upon the unreasonable man." -- George Bernard Shaw
However, Matt Drudge has single-handedly done more to make the elitists media royalty do their job than anyone else.
