Time for Bush to come out swinging, he really needs to reassert the point that there aren't to be "negotiations" with the Iraqis about what they will or won't agree to at this point. He really needs to run the riot act on Blix. This is almost embarrassing.

Screw that. The President needs to just come on national TV and announce that the first wave has released their ordnance.

"Iraq undertakes to provide the inspectors with more documents: This is an admission that Iraq has to this day held back documents." Another quite adequate causus belli.
LET'S ROLL!

"Iraqi officers will join inspection flights on Iraqi helicopters. Iraqi officers will be given the chance to keep an eye and report on the inspectors actions and conversations to their superiors" .

Bush has to repudiate this charade immediately. He let Powell and the EU make him look like a fool. I hope he is plenty angry and ready to act.

Annan, Blix and ElBaradei, have made Saddam Hussein safe from US attack for another two months. During that period, the Iraqi dictator has been assured of immunity by the UN weapons inspectors. Not so. As the UN is not the arbiter of how the US will proceed.
D-Day has, in all liklihood, been set. The clock is running. Only Saddam's coming clean and stepping down can stop it.
All else is irrelevant.

It looks like Blix and ElBaradei rolled over on their backs for Saddam to give them a tummy rub.

The inspectors wound up their two days of talks with Iraqi officials in Baghdad cynically billed as tough demands for more cooperation by signing onto a feeble 10-point accord that, point by point, blunted the teeth US and British diplomacy had inserted in UN Security Council resolution 1441. One never knows whether to believe Debka, but if this is true, Mr. Blix has just made the all-too-common mistake of 'misunderestimating' Mr. Bush. He has chosen to bet the UN that he can keep Bush from doing what Bush said he was going to do.
Bad bet. |
