Attack on 'insular' US paper (NY TIMES TOO "AMERICAN"?!?)

The outgoing head of the leading newspaper for Americans abroad, the International Herald Tribune, yesterday accused the number one US domestic daily, the New York Times, of undermining the country's standing around the world.
Peter Goldmark, chairman of the Paris-based newspaper, fired his parting shot at the Times in a defiant statement to staff explaining his decision to step down. The Times is now the Tribune's sole owner after years of joint ownership with the Washington Post ended late last year. His criticism was all the more wounding as the Times prides itself on its foreign coverage and cosmopolitan views.
Mr Goldmark attacked the Times for encouraging an insular, "America-first" approach to the newspaper business which, he argued, would harm the nation's interests abroad.
He said: "I am the last publisher of the International Herald Tribune as an independent newspaper with its own outlook on the world. At a time when the world is growing to mistrust America, it needs thoughtful voices and independent perspectives."

The NYT is part of the "Blame America First" crowd and do their best to undermine this country.

I'm confused. Is that good or bad?

I don't know what this guy was really thinking of, but it could make a kind of sense. The NY Times certainly isn't American from our point of view, but they do have a very narrow and parochial attitude these days compared to their past policies. Even their interest in constantly attacking the Bush administration could seem parochial from the viewpoint of an observer abroad.
Maybe this editor just wanted to do more stories that have nothing to do with America at all, pro or con, whereas Howell Raines wants to bash America at every opportunity.

The Times, too insular (def. narrow provencial viewpoint), the Times, too patriotic ...... BWAHAHAHAHAHA! It does make you wonder what the International Herald Tribune's "own outlook on the world" prints.

Heck, even compared to the Washington Post, the New York Times is leftist. But compared to European left of center papers, such as the Independent, the Guardian/Observer, or the Scotsman, the New York Times is FAR superior, in both accuracy and in giving space to a diversity of viewpoints. Here is how the real leftists look at the New York Times takeover of the IHT:

As a onetime reader of the NYTs I know what Peter Goldmark means.
The Times coverage of international news is dismal, almost non-existent.
The NYTs only role now is as standard-bearer for the homosexual lobby
(and its allies, the Democratic Party, the 'anti-war' movement, etc.)

It's true, it's true!!! Anyone who reads the Times from abroad would get a sick, sick feeling about the good 'ole USA. Thanks heavens it's not really reflective of this great country.

Is
"approach" a code word for "propaganda"?
I wonder if any of these people have ever thought of truth for its own sake.

Right ... the NYT represents the Upper East Side of Manhattan and a certain set of Liberal Elites only. You cant get more parochial than that. Still, IHT is/was just a rehash of WP and NYT articles, so not sure what is so different about IHT.

That's just the sour grapes of a hack being canned by new owners. Can't expect a Europhile to understand the nuances of Manhattan geography.
