The more things change... WW II posters still relevant today
Posted on 01/19/2003 12:00:55 PM PST by Dan Day
While looking for a famous WW II poster (the British "Very well then, alone") to make a point on a thread, I found a motherlode of WW II posters of all types, and I was struck by how many of them would be appropriate for the upcoming war(s) against terrorism (including Iraq). Other than possibly modernizing a few dates or costumes on the posters, they'd still be perfectly applicable today.

Dan Day,
Great job! Very cool posters that are timeless, especially appropriate in today's dangerous world.

Sometimes old stereotypes can be pretty funny.

Thanks for posting this - I did a search for these type of posters some time ago for use on a thread as well. Your search turned up better results!

I have a set of posters from the First World War. My father had joined the French Ambulance Corps because he was too impatient to wait for the U.S. to join in.
Those posters would also fit our current situation. Patriotism, freedom and the right to defend yourself against aggression don't go out of date.

I couldn't find any of the posters I have on-line, but here's one that certainly fits the present situation. In fact it's really weird how well it fits what happened on 9/11 and afterwards:

I'd copy it here, but they've cleverly rigged it to prevent copying.

Fascinating, Dan! Thanks so much for collating such a great selection.
Just by the way, the US embassy here has organised a display of original WWII patriotic posters, at the Maritime Museum here in Sydney. Also included are Garands and Colts used in the Pacific war, the story of the Sullivan brothers and the like. Very moving and thought-provoking.

Thanks and a bunp. I hope you don't mind I've copied a number of image locations and will probably use in coming posts.
