The war in Iraq is gearing up, and the demonstrators are putting on their best game faces. The big bosses of labor are flummoxed and befuddled. What to do?
Historically, labor has supported the president in times of war, including World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm, our first Gulf War. Longshoremen and laborers in hard hats have famously done hand-to-hand combat with the peaceniks of the '60s and stood by the president in times of strife.
And, honestly, why not? The billions spent in wartime prime the pump of an ailing economy and are a boon to labor, which is among war's greatest beneficiaries. And we do have an ailing economy. World War II required so much labor that women left their aprons and kitchens behind and joined the workforce for the first time en masse. This is a trend that has not yet abated.
Labor has for decades fought against the peace-and-love crowd that has now merged with the environmentalists and the goofy left combining into one big lovefest. These environmentalists, who have been anti-labor for decades, are now suddenly strange bedfellows with labor, holding hands in the mass marches of...

Great article Adam! We've missed you!
BTW...did you notice how OLD the grizzled protestors were? Most of these people were the SAME people who were in the 60's!
They'll never grow up!
Best to you!

You might want to separate the Labor Leaders who are hard core Socialist Democrats from most of the rank and file union members who have become more evenly split between Republican and Democrat lately. By the time Bush leaves office the political landscape will have undergone a dramatic rearrangement with a lot of people switching allegiance. The shake-up should be healthy but who comes out on top is uncertain.

Good one! Illustrates the point I've been making (over and over) that the people on these thug-like protests are STILL the hippie generation!

I found an article yesterday about a 50-year-old woman who organized a bus trip of protestors to D.C., based on the idea that the protests of the sixties were beyond her scope at the time. I read it thinking, "give yourself away, why don't you." She wasn't gonna let it pass her by THIS time, no sir. Stupid, shallow spinelessness.
I was just looking over the S.F. property destruction pictures and reading the "anarchy-rules" comments. If we wanted to make the peacenik factions implode we couldn't do a better job of infiltrating their ranks and making them look like idiots.

I was thinking they should pay for the damage. Hit 'em in their wallet, that would definitely put a damper on their destruction.
Also, have high bails set and arrest more of them. The police here feel that their hands are tied as the DA here is a commie.
Hopefully we can dump him...things are changing here.
BTW, you notice that W's approval ratings went up 3% points *after* their protests? ****Snicker****
It seems their protests are having the opposite effect, they are alienating people.

(I don't agree with W on immigration, but I will vote for him, and he's RIGHT on this issue)

Well we can't really make them pay in the practical sense unless they're each arrested, charged, and convicted, and as you said we don't have enough cop manpower to arrest every punk in these instances. They know this and they think they're being clever and subverting the system. Sounds like a certain 'anarchist' with the initials O.B.L. They aspire to be like Al Qaeda. They're sick.

Towards the end of our SF Freep on the steps of City Hall, a group of SEIU activists were leading mindless chants. They were wearing their blue SEIU T-shirts representing some local union.
During a break in their dancin' I casually said to one of the union organizers, "Hey, I'm a member of your union!" (I truly am). He did a double take, and mumbled that I should be on their side. I responed, "Naahhhh, I love America."
He danced away.
