There is a lot of talk going around about arabs and moslems attacking Israel with NBC (Nuclear/Biological/Chemical) warfare, unconventional weapons, or "Weapons of Mass Destruction" (WMD´s). Against the backdrop of the government of Israel telling everyone that there is no risk out of one side of it´s mouth, while telling of unpreparedness for terrible dangers out of the other, there is little differentiation made between the types of attacks to which Israel will be subjected. People are thinking about their gas masks and sealed rooms, making sure everything is in order. While this is as it should be, there is an additional dimension to consider.
While there are many types of unconventional weapons whose usage, by definition, removes the group that uses them from such protections as the Geneva Convention, the effects of these weapons vary greatly. Most of them fall into the category of tactical weapons. These would include such things as various kinds of poison gases, HIV-infested genocide bombers, genocide bombers studding their bombs with rat poison and rusty metal pieces, cyanide, ricin, anthrax (probably), and other reifications of ´palestinian´ culture. The effects of these are terrible but limited in scope. They probably aren´t going to kill many more people at a time than a few lucky genocide bombers. Maybe a couple dozen, maybe a couple hundred, possibly even a few thousand - though probably not. While every life is precious, these numbers of casualties are expected in war. By themselves, they do not hurt Israel´s military strength in a meaningful way.
If Israel chooses to punish the perpetrators of an attack like this with her military might (instead of, for example, telling them they couldn´t go visit their friends in england, or go to class at birzeit university), her ability to do so would not be lessened.
However, with other types of these weapons the attack would be qualitatively different. Something along the lines of a smallpox epidemic, or nuclear attack would result in Israel´s ability to respond militarily being dramatically lessened. Weapons such as these have a strategic effect, beyond the tactical level.
There is a twofold danger associated with this scenario. First, Israel´s ability to respond properly to the attacker may, after being weakened by the attack, be insufficient. Second, and much more critical, Israel´s ability to defend herself from the rest of her arab and moslem enemies may be insufficient.
Despite having different names like syria, egypt, iran, iraq, saudi arabia, hamas, islamic jihad, plo, and al qaeda, we face, and have always faced, a unified enemy when it comes to the planed genocide of the Jewish people. As they have united before to attack us when they sensed weakness, they will again. We have no reason to believe that the great mass of Israel-haters will not come together again if they feel the destruction of Israel is within their grasp.
In 1967, Israel was faced with a pan-arab coalition numbering tens of millions, whose continually repeated goal was to destroy Israel and kill all of her Jews. The coalition arrayed against her was outfitted with masses of the finest, conventional soviet weaponry available. They had the potential to accomplish those goals in a matter of days. As the attacks continued through 1967, Israel exercised great restraint, not escalating, and only replying to attacks with a similar level of force. This did not make things better, it made things worse.
However, at 7:45am, Jerusalem time, on Monday, June 5th, 1967 the People and Nation of Israel chose life, so that they would live.
Casting aside restraint, we used the most powerful weapons we had, of the type that were going to be used against us, and survived.
In 2003, Israel is faced with a pan-islamic coalition numbering almost two billion, whose continually repeated goal is to destroy Israel and kill all of her Jews. The coalition arrayed against her is outfitted with nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction. They could accomplish those goals in a matter of minutes.
Israel again is acting with restraint, as our enemies escalate. But as soon as we allow one of these WMD type attacks to occur, we may no longer be able to respond as we would like. We may no longer be able to keep our enemies at bay. With Tel-Aviv gone, and the bloody hands of ramallah raised at every Jerusalem street corner, it will be too late.
However, at 7:45 am, Jerusalem time, on Tuesday, January 14th, 2003, the People and Nation of Israel choose to continue to exercise restraint....

Anything else and I guarantee you there is going to be at least one Israeli finger on one red button which will serve to exercise Israel's own nuclear fist and forever smite their enemies from the face of the earth. I personally am not a Jew, but I would have no problem with that result.
I doubt the ability of anyone to actually MAKE that size warhead anymore.
The biggest US nuclear weapon ever was the Mark 17. It was one of the first weaponized thermonuclear devices, and it had a yield of 15-20 megatons.
The biggest Soviet weapon ever deployed was the 25-megaton warhead on the SS-18 Mod 1. The largest warhead currently deployed is a 20-megaton warhead on the SS-18 Mod 6.
The biggest thermonuclear detonation was the Tsar Bomba, a 58-megaton bomb that was tested exactly once, in 1961. The USSR never deployed the damn thing, because it was just too dangerous to use.
Wow, when I was at the Army's Nuclear Biological and Chemical warfare school on active duty, we were led to believe that 50 MT was the average size of the US MIRV warheads. "City-Busters" they called 'em. That was in gee....1982! I stand corrected.
If Israel were attacked with multiple nukes simultaneously and destroyed the subs would destroy the attackers and in all probability most major population centers of the Arab World.
