WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 - As the Bush administration heads toward a crucial United Nations Security Council meeting at the end of this month, a strong council majority appears less willing than ever to agree that early military action against Iraq is justified.

Snip

There is widespread international appreciation of the fact that inspectors would not be in Iraq today if the United States had not used its overwhelming military and diplomatic power, the official said. Bush could easily declare victory now and save himself a potential debacle. He's shown seriousness, and Saddam caved, the official said. If you ask whether the world is in a better position vis-a-vis Saddam Hussein than it was a year ago, the answer is Absolutely. Is that victory Yes, if you want it to be.

we could have begun the troop buildup months ago.

And I think we have a RIGHT to know who those countries are; if they insist that we let the inspectors in before WE go, we should have the right to tell everybody just whose side everybody is on.

I'm thinking that either the report to the UN by the inspectors and/or the State of the Union speech will do just this -- totally discredit the naysayers.

The media will use any lack of support to fan the flames of protest.

"He who controls communication rules the world."
The liberal press will do anything to destroy the U.S. in return for ratings and socialist power.
I think the media runs the U.N. The U.N. believes the propaganda rather than push it aside and seriously see the real world and decide for themselves. Example: Anti-war protests are big news in the media, but the 10,000 pro-U.S. protestors in S.Korea never made the airwaves. Gee, I wonder why. 100 anti-American protestors in Russia had re-runs!!!

It must be that the protestors do not want war at any cost for any reason, which is an unrealistic -- if admirable -- want.

Nonsense. If Slick Willie (or another Rat) were the Prez there would hardly be a protester out there. Do you remember any major demonstrations during x42's Operation Desert Fox or Balkans War? There weren't any. ...And thousands of innocent Serbs and Iraqi civilians died in those conflicts.

These protesters have don't have a principled bone in their bodies. They're socialist Rats, pure and simple.

You nailed it. The socialist media's agenda is there for ....few of us to see. ...The few of us who don't rely on the NY Slimes, Washington Post, CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, and most local city rags for our news.

He said that every day that this drags on, it is making America look weaker in the international community.

Americans were bombed about 4 (5?) times by Al Quata during the Clinton reign of terror, yet Clinton talked big, and did nothing. He caused the belief that America is soft bellied. That they were afraid to fight back. Clntons lack of action led to the 9/11 attack. If they could attack without consequences elsewhere, why not right inside the U.S itself? So they did.
Since the 9/11 attack, other nations now see we may not be invinsable, and now they feel they can terrify us, and control us.
Gee, thanks for the legacy of death, Bill!
Anyway, now Bush has to reverse the damage done, and it won't be easy. They don't want America to rebuild and regain it's strength. They will now do anything to disrespect and propagandize whatever Bush does to secure America. Anything.
With the propaganda aid offered by anti-american peacenicks and press here in the U.S., many nations may now feel America can be defeated.
I've always said the liberals will be the cause of the fall of America either from within or without someday. It's happened all through history. They never learn. That's why it is so important to fight the concept of liberals having any more power within the U.S. They're nation killers.

Of course this is going to be the day to day garbage that we'll have to hear until Jan 27th. Well I know that's the day they have to support to the security council. And Bush is saying we will have damning evidence by the end of the month. Will it be on the 27th? I don't know. But until Bush releases his damning evidence I could care less what the security council or anyone elses says. It's fluff as far as I'm concerned. Checkmate is still at hand.

Yep, I think it's dawned on the Islamists that once Saddam goes, the domino effect could mess us all their plans. Iran and Saudi Arabia could then experience nasty revolutions, although they'd be the exact opposite in character.

The real sleeper issue here isn't the UN, per se, but whether NATO can continue to exist as a mutual alliance after "No" votes by France and Germany.

The muslim religious leaders have claimed France and Germany for the nation of Islam. Those 2 countries are so full of muslims, the leaders cower in fear of them.
So much for the glories of diversity.
France and Germany are now considerd Islamic countries and part of the Nation of Islam according to the muslim clerics.

No. They're doing it for political power. If they truely were for peace in the world, they'd have protested the Clinton troop deployments and bombings - and they weren't even for national security!
Clinton reign of terror bombings =OK.
Bush national security =bad.
If they were honestly for peace, they'd be for peace no matter who was in the Whitehouse, right?

Ah...it is NOT wrong. Why do they sign the articles of surrender, so they can auction the pen used to sign them to the highest bidder? I suppose McArthur had the Japanese aboard the USS Missouri for a photo op? You break just ONE article of surrender, and the conquering army can go back into battle as if it NEVER ceased. Choose to ignore historical fact if you please, doesn't make your point correct.

Quick thinking under fire...

All the carriers will not be in final position by that time, but Duh... that's why they carry aircraft!

I was in South Carolina at the Charleston airport when the first C-5A landed there, at the co-located Military Airbase... Strom Thurman was scheduled to talk right after the plane landed. The C5A landed right on schedule, and promptly blew 4 tires.

Strom strode to the microphone, and his first words were..."That's why I made them put 23 tires on the sucker!"

”Going to the UN was a mistake. Not because I'm all gung-ho for war, but because its only purpose apparently is to protect third world dictators and communists from the consequences of their actions. ”

Wrong. Its purpose was to focus Saddam on courting the UN rather than building up his WMDs while we prepared to destroy him.

The Fifth Column reared its head in that protest march. I got onto Salier's show and made the point that liberals hate America and they hate everything America stands for and will do whatever it takes to bring America down.

The marchers were members of and children of the Herbert Marcuse generation. A sad display indeed.

I don't think I am too far off on this one. By even including the UN in this process, Bush makes them look important when they are irrelevant.

The air war is more than likely underway. It would be more cost effective to simply put bullets in the heads of Hussein's family but I am all for blowing some stuff up along the way.

I want to thank you guys for your excellent posts and clarifying so many things. This has been the best string on the subject that I ever read. While I was able to see the big picture I was having trouble seeing the trees because the forest was getting in the way. These posts have provided me with an articulate foundation, much needed and much appreciated.
