Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach quarterbacked the same NFL team. Now they're part owners of the same team -- planning to enter a car in NASCAR's Winston Cup Series in 2004.
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks are partners in Hall of Fame Racing, which will be directed by former Trans-Am driver Bill Saunders, who will act as managing partner.
"Roger and I have discussed this for a while, and all the pieces just came together. We're not naive going into this thing. We recognize it will be a real challenge," Aikman said in a telephone interview Thursday with The Associated Press.
So far, Aikman said, the team has no shop, no equipment, no employees other than the three owners, no driver and no sponsor. The latter will be a priority, the three-time Super Bowl winner added.
"For Roger and me, our involvement will, hopefully, be in sponsorship, and we'll be go to the races when we can," he said.
"Maybe we can bring some things to a company that others can't. We're not in it for the sake of being in it," Aikman added. "We'll be up and running in 2004 but we know we've got a lot of work ahead."

Aikman said Joe Gibbs, former coach of the Washington Redskins and now owner of Joe Gibbs Racing, which won Winston Cup championships in 2000 and 2002, has helped get the team off the ground.
"Coach Gibbs has been a tremendous resource for our team already," Aikman said. "When he got involved in the sport, people helped him and he is returning the favor and keeping us, hopefully, from hitting some of the same pitfalls he found."

Roger Staubach is one of my childhood heros. Never warmed up to Aikman, though. But I wish them success in this venture. (I'm a Jeff Gordon fan.)

Jeff Gordon is a sissy bump! ;)
I like the fact that they don't have a driver, a team, a . . .

I read an article many years back before Aikman's last Super Bowl Appearance about how Roger and Troy became friends. Roger helped Troy with the pressures of being the Cowboys QB.

Staubach--a real class act. I think that some of Roger's good graces rubbed off on Aikman. I wish them both well with their new adventure.

I know, but they expect to be up and running by the '04 season. That made me laugh. As for JG being a 'sissy', have you seen the hot chicks he's been dating lately? Did you see him on Saturday Night Live last weekend? The show was lousy (SNL is a mere ghost of its former self these days). But JG's new look is edgy and hip-grunge. Kind of like a Park Avenue version of Tony Stewart, LOL!

WOW!
I need to go spend a little more time on the NA$CAR forums, this is awesome.
Aikman is a cool dude, he does a weekly radio show in Dallas these days, and he is really a pretty humorous guy.
He took the job of QB of the Cowboys very seriously and did not f*ck around. That is why he HATED Switzer and Gailey.
You notice now he said he'd play for Parcells if the coach asked him to. The dude is all about winning.
Sometimes these kind of guys come off a little standoffish, but they almost have to be that way, to succeed.
I got ten bucks that says they do quite well in their new endeavor.
I hope my boy, Jeff Burton, ends up driving for them.
This is awesome news.

Welcome to the party boys. Don't forget to bring your checkbooks. (suggestion: Shelby Howard of Greenfield Indiana will be old enough by '04 to drive in NASCAR. He's the next Ryan Newman, get on it now, you'll find him in the ARCA series.)

The rookie crop last year was very impressive.
JJohnson impressed because of the stuck throttle incident at Laguna or Watkins.
Anybody that can take that crash and get right back on the throttle, has got "IT".
Newman reminds me of Cool Hand Luke, he will/should win multiple championships.
Busch is another cool hand, who should do quite well.
The Jimmy Spinners of the world won't be around much longer, the new kids are going to blow them away.
Just like they did several decades ago in Moto-X.

As for JG being a 'sissy', have you seen the hot chicks he's been dating lately? Ever since his marriage of convenience ended he's been looking for ways to hide the fact that he's gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Okay, so maybe he's not gay, but he's a Yankee, which is even worse

Do you spose that evil "square" on the 55 square D chevy is what did Bobby Hamilton in?
To: Hoosier43fan
I'll bet
it was!!! And look how the "Public Square" has been suffering these days: evil is attracted to it!
I wrapped my Christmas present (a nice set of dominoes) to my evil sister in a square pizza box. She wasn't happy about it being so square. Course her anger might have also had something to do with her working at Domino's Pizza. :-)
I wonder if the city blocks in Ithaca are squares . . .
Jeff Gordon likes it when things go square, like "when Robby Gordon MOVED Jeff Gordon out of the way to WIN the New Hampshire 300, "He should be embarrassed right now to win that race," Jeff Gordon said of Robby's winning move. "It was gonna be a heckuva battle -- it was gonna be between me and him, anyway. I just wish it would have been done fair and square instead of just knocking me out of the way.""
Yeah, I'll bet Jeff, you do real good when the devil's on your side!!!! (half kidding)

NOOOOO!! I want Burton, Martin, Bush, and Kenseth to stick together with Roush! I like all of them and think they make a good team.
Martin came soooo close this year...I hope he finally does it in 2003. If anyone out there deserves a championship, he does.

You may be right about the young guns, but that doesn't bode well for Jeff Burton. Perhaps not yet a "rocker stocker", he's no spring chicken! Better go with Ryan in '03 and beyond.
To: dixierose
I think somebody is going to have to move from Roush.
I don't think four teams is workong out for all concerned.
Jeff lost/fired his crew chief midyear, and still struggled the rest of the way.
He looks like the odd man out to me.
I think he can still drive but he needs a change of scenery and a kick in the ass.
Roush will do better with three teams and they still have Martin, the vet to groom the kids.

I don't know about Johnny and I don't know anyone who has personally gone to bed with the guy, but it has been talked about around the garages for a while now as well as TV.

If they listen to Coach Gibbs they will probably do good if they luck out with a decent driver. There are a lot of young guns out there now that's beginning to make some of the older drivers jealeous. Never heard anyone on Gibbs teams say a bad word about him.
