AMMAN, Jordan - A Jordanian couple who kept up a secret relationship by using a dog to carry their love letters were revealed when the woman's brother discovered one of the notes, sparking an argument in which the pet was killed.
The tale had a bittersweet ending, a friend of the couple reported Monday: The woman's father agreed to let the couple marry. The proposal came in the last letter delivered by the man's 3-year-old German shepherd, Big Joe.
"They keep saying, 'We'll never forget him,'" neighbor Nashaat't al-Majali told The Associated Press. He identified the man by his first name only, Thamer, and would not give the woman's name.
As the dog had done often in the last year, Big Joe walked a few blocks Saturday from Thamer's home to the woman's, a letter in a cloth pouch strapped to his back. The two lived in a community north of the capital Amman is predominantly conservative Muslim, where dating is prohibited and marriages are usually arranged by parents.
The Jordanian news agency Petra said the woman's brother surprised her, snatched the letter and read it. In a screaming match that ensued, the dog attacked the brother. The brother grabbed a stone and hit the dog on the head, killing him.
Neighbors in Zarqa, 17 miles northeast of Amman, rallied around the couple and pressed the father to accept Thamer's proposal to his daughter, Petra said. The marriage was expected to take place soon, said al-Majali.
Big Joe was buried Saturday in the backyard of Thamer's house, al-Majali said.
